Robert “Barney” Barnes
BARNES, Robert “Barney” – Passed away peacefully at the Greater Niagara General Hospital on Tuesday November 20, 2018 at the age of 91. Beloved husband of the late Mary Barnes (2016). Devoted father of Barbara (Greg “Sam”) Daniels, Tom Barnes, Sandra (Brian) Thomas and James (Cheryl) Barnes. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren currently living in Shanghai, Vancouver, Toronto, Chicago, Denver and Niagara Falls. Barney worked for the City of Niagara Falls for 44 years retiring as Superintendent of Parks and Cemeteries. He was inducted into the Niagara Falls Sports Wall of Fame for his dedication to sports here in Niagara Falls. As an athlete, he played football, hockey and baseball on City and Ontario championship teams. He coached minor baseball teams from 1949 – 1955 to City and Niagara District championships. Bob also coached two Ontario Finalist teams in 1949 and 1951, one Ontario finalist squad in 1953 and the Niagara Falls Citizens who were Ontario Champions in 1955. His officiating career covered baseball, football and hockey at the high school, college and professional level where he officiated in more than 350 games as a Linesman in the American Hockey League. He was president of the G.N.B.A., the G.N.S.A., and the Niagara District Baseball Association and a long-time member of the Niagara Falls Recreation Commission.
Barney’s family will receive friends at MORSE & SON FUNERAL HOME, 5917 Main St., on Sunday from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. A funeral service to celebrate the life of Barney will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 2 pm. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Those who wish may make a memorial donation to Heart Niagara.
