Obituary Overview
Richard Pepper
It is with sadness that the family of Richard “Dick” Pepper announces his passing at home on March 29, 2018. Dick was born in Galt, Ontario to Stanley and Jessie (Gilroy) Pepper. After high school, he joined the Navy in 1956 and trained as an Aircraft Controlman, then in 1957 was selected for Observers Mate Training. He served in VS 880 Squadron at CFB Shearwater and aboard HMCS Bonaventure until 1961. After a short period out of the Navy, he re-enlisted and served again with VS 880 and in Shearwater Tower Operations until 1967. He was then selected for the Commissioning from the Ranks Program and upon completion was selected for pilot training. He trained as a helicopter pilot and served in HS 50 Squadron at Shearwater and on HMCS Bonaventure. He also served in Helicopter Air Detachments aboard HMCS St. Laurent and HMCS Fraser. He then transferred over to National Defence Public Affairs and worked in that capacity in Halifax, the Middle East, Victoria, Ottawa and Toronto. He retired from the Military in 1985 and joined the Canadian Coast Guard in Toronto. He was immediately transferred to Halifax. After retiring from the Coast Guard, he joined Grand Circle Travel and took tourists via train from Toronto to Vancouver. He volunteered in the Cardiac Unit with Team Valentine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. He had two hobbies which he enjoyed. In early years it was Car Rallying with Bill Jackson and John Slade and in later years it was golfing at Oakfield Golf Club. He is survived by his wife Sharon (Oakes); son Ryan (Carrie) and grandchildren Madelyn and Christian. A Celebration of his life will be held at the Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth between 1 and 4 p.m. Friday, April 6.
