Obituary
Castelino, Regina Aurora Bernadette passed away unexpectedly on June 22, 2018 in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada at the age of 70. She is lovingly remembered by her husband Avelino (Sonny) Castelino, her daughters, Karen Castelino and Cherie Scott, son-in-law Guy Scott, and her beloved grandchildren, Sophia Scott and Justus Scott.
Regina was born in Mumbai, India on November 15, 1947 to John and Sofia Rodrigues. She will be greatly missed by her sister, Ruby (Joe) Martyris and brother Phillip (Merlyn) Rodrigues, her sisters-in-law, Claire Castelino, Antoinette (Henry) Pereira, Anita (Neves) D’Sa and brother-in-law, Joey Castelino. Her nieces, Rachel, Lynette, Pearl, and nephews, Gerry, Ashley, Ian, Neil and Edward have many fond memories of visiting her.
Regina’s life was primarily centered in her faith in God, her deep love for her family and fascination with all things food and flowers.
She believed that with unshakeable faith, all things were possible. She was a pillar of strength for her husband Avelino and stood by his side in faith and love through 44 years of marriage. She always said, “ A family that prays together, stays together.”
Regina encouraged her daughters to dream big and beyond their wildest dreams. She adored her two grandchildren, Sophia and Justus. She looked forward to reading her granddaughter’s poems and hearing her musical tributes in church, and was thrilled that her only grandson, Justus, inherited her deep dimples and beautiful smile.
For those who knew her well, she was deeply passionate about cooking feasts for those she loved. She spent hours getting lost in recipe books, experimenting with new dishes and in her later years, dreaming of being on Master Chef. Her younger daughter, Cherie, was inspired to make her famous version of an iconic Indian dish: Lamb Biryani that was covered by the Portland Press Herald Food & Dining section.
Regina inspired her daughter Karen to travel widely and would watch travel shows with her. They spent hours discussing the various cuisines Karen tasted and took pictures of on her travels. Regina was happiest when she was found in her garden, surrounded by colorful flowers, foliage and harvesting fresh herbs.
Regina is fondly remembered by her colleagues at Cathay Pacific Airways, India where she spent over 16 years in the travel industry and at Synovate, Canada – a global market research firm, for almost two decades.
A viewing will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 29, 2018 at St. Mary’s Parish, 5251 Joyce Street, Vancouver, BC, followed by Mass at 11:00 am, celebrant Fr. Guy Rivard, and a brief reception after to share memories of Regina with family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Greater Vancouver Food Bank
