Obituary Overview
Lovingly Remembered
Lilian Wilson passed away peacefully in Calgary, AB on February 5, 2018 at the age of 92. Lilian will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Kathryn Tucker and Zona Wilson of Calgary, sister Joyce Anderson of Marwayne, sister-in-law Bette Wilson of Calgary, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Hugh Wilson, brother Kenneth & Victoria Hayes, in-laws Vernon Anderson, Loudon Wilson, Frank & Marie Wilson, Ila & Ralph Harper; and son-in-law Chub Tucker.
Lilian was born in Onion Lake, SK. She and Hugh farmed in the Mossleigh area for many years before moving to High River and then to Calgary.
Mom loved to learn, and this she passed on to her daughters. After graduating high school she was granted a War Emergency Interim Teacher’s Certificate and immediately started teaching. She continued with her own education through summer schools and correspondence and received her certification to teach Home Economics and Business Education. She graduated University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Education. Her teaching career took her to one-room school houses, teacherages and schools in Topland, Skye Glen, Clear Range, Fosk, Mossleigh, Blackie, Cayley, Okotoks and Calgary. We attended the same high school where Mom taught and when our classmates learned she was our mom, they always said what a wonderful teacher she was and that they really liked her. Even after retirement, Mom enrolled in the RIA program.
Lilian’s other interests included reading, crosswords, handwork & crafts, curling, Canadian football, statistics, photography, travel and square dancing. Mom and Dad started square dancing in 1971 and served on various committees with the Revellers/Prairie Winds Club, the Calgary Square Dance Association and the Alberta Federation. They were the editors of the Grapevine Square Dance Magazine, committee members for the Alberta Square Dance Institute in Banff, and not only danced in but also helped teach high school kids to dance for the 1988 Olympics opening ceremonies. They received the Alberta Rose Award of the Calgary & District Square & Round Dance Association in 1995 and the Canadian Square & Round Dance Society Long Service Award for 35 years in 2006.
Mom was always on the go; have bus pass, will travel. She had the best collage of transit maps in her purse. She also loved to go on road trips. We’d head off somewhere-ish. We were never lost; we were just sightseeing.
We love you and miss you, Mom.
At Lilian’s request, no service will be held. Inurnment will take place at a later date. If desired, in memory of Lilian, memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warriors at woundedwarriors.ca/ways-to-give/donation/. Flowers gratefully declined.
