Norma (Nome)’s Obituary
Norma (Nome) MacLean, age 92, died on December 14 at Canterbury Court, a caring and loving community of the Canterbury Foundation, in Edmonton. Nome was born in Winnipeg, MB on January 25, 1926 to Chester and Violet Elliott and was the youngest of three daughters. She grew up in Bowden, AB and in her high school years worked in the pharmacy of the town drug store in a profession she would liked to have pursued. Unfortunately, the cost of a university education was too prohibitive at the time so, upon graduating from high school, she moved to Calgary to enter the workforce in the accounting department of the city’s flagship Hudson’s Bay store. In 1950, Nome married the great love of her life, Hec MacLean, and left her career to become a homemaker and mother to stepdaughter Sherrill. Shortly after their marriage, the young family moved to Strathmore where Hec had purchased the family newspaper. In 1952 they welcomed the birth of their son Brock. Their family complete, more moves followed over the years, including to Calgary, Dawson Creek and Fairview. It was in Fairview that Nome returned to the workplace to join Hec, working side by side for eight years at the Fairview Post. When Hec became ill with cancer and had to be in Calgary for treatment and surgery, Nome bravely soldiered on in his absence, making sure The Post always went to press. Their final move was to Peace River until Hec’s death in 1983. During his final illness, fate dealt another harsh blow when Nome, too, was diagnosed with cancer. Sympathetic to their situation, her doctor discharged her from hospital earlier than he would have preferred so she could return to be at Hec’s side. In 1991, Nome left Peace River to move to Edmonton where she enjoyed reuniting with dear friends and making new ones. Over the years, she and her friends enjoyed a number of travel adventures that took them abroad, as well as across Canada and the US. Her last big trip was when Doug and Sherrill took her, along with their son, daughter-in-law and a grandson to Maui. It was a special and memorable time for all four generations. In addition to her love for family and friends, Nome will be remembered for her sense of humour, appreciation of fine things, and her courage in dealing with her many and significant health issues. She is survived by her daughter Sherrill (Doug), son Brock (Dalia), grandchildren Holly Roy, Chris Roy and John MacLean, great grandchildren Max, Nathan Heather, Logan, Cash, Dusty and Belle and great great granddaughter Kimberly, along with several nieces and nephews. Nome was predeceased by her parents, loving husband Hec, sisters Peg and Anne, and their husbands. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 28, at 3:30 pm at Canterbury Foundation Chapel with the Rev. Joanne Webster officiating. The graveside service is being held on December 20, 2:00 pm at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Peace River. Nome’s family wishes to extend our greatest and warmest gratitude to all the staff at the Canterbury Foundation, particularly those at Canterbury Court, for their great compassion and loving care. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Canterbury Foundation, 8403-142 St, Edmonton, T5R 4L3
