Solanik, Nastasia (Nettie)
April 20, 1918 – July 16, 2018
We announce with sadness that mom passed away on July 16, 2018 at
Kelowna Hospice. She is predeceased by her husband of 61 years, George,
her infant daughter Eileen, son George, daughter Sylvia, son in law Jerome
Gillen, her parents, five brothers and a sister. She is survived by her sister, Lil
Walker of Medstead, SK, sisters-in-law Vera Oranga, of Whiterock, BC and
Joyce Oranga, of Maidstone, SK, son Wilf (Pearl) of Kelowna, BC and
daughter Nancy (Doug) of Lantzville, BC, 6 grandchildren,14 great
grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mom’s parents arrived in Trail, BC, where she was born, from Russia in 1912.
The family eventually moved to Saskatchewan and were involved in a variety
of occupations including sawmill work. At 16, mom met and married dad.
Together they built a successful farm and raised four children in northern
Saskatchewan, where they also owned and operated the Ranger Supply store
and enjoyed time together at their cabin on Chitek Lake. Mom loved music
and entertained many playing the accordion at community dances.
Upon their retirement, mom and dad moved first to North Battleford, SK and
then Kelowna, BC, to a comfortable home with a swimming pool which was
much enjoyed by family and friends for many years. They travelled often and
loved sharing life’s experiences with others. After dad died, mom moved to
the Hawthorn Retirement Centre, where she continued to enjoy life to the
fullest.
Mom will be remembered for her kindness and affection. Family and friends
are grateful that we were able to celebrate her 100th birthday with her at a
memorable party this past spring.
Special thanks to the staff at Hawthorn, the Kelowna General Hospital and
Hospice for their care and compassion.
A small graveside service will be held at Lakeview Memorial Gardens at 2:00
pm on Monday, July 23, where mom will be laid down beside dad, as was her
wish. All are welcome at a reception to follow at 3:00 pm at Hawthorn
Retirement Centre, 867 KLO Rd, Kelowna BC.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Central Okanagan Hospice
House in Kelowna, 2035 Ethel St, V1Y 2Z5, or any other charity of your
choice.
