OBITUARY
Miss Mary Ann Cain
December 8, 1917 – March 12, 2018
Sadly, on March 12, 2018, Mary Ann Cain passed peacefully at the age of 100. Born near Timiskaming, Ontario, in 1917, Mary Ann was the oldest daughter of Mary Ann and Anton (Anthony) Perehuda (Anglicized to Peregooda) and one of 11 children: George, Mary, Alex, Alice (McDonald), Alma (Bowman), Catherine (Knight), Lillian (Carnegie), Frances (DeSousa), Norman, Victor and William. She is survived by her brother Billy.
Mary kept in touch with most of her sisters growing up, and they often took day trips to the beach. In 1945, she met John Michael Cain at Wasaga Beach. They were married the following year on October 26, 1946. Michael John, named after his dad, was born in November 1947, followed by Margaret Ann, named after her grandmother’s, almost exactly 2 years later, John Gerald again named after his dad, was born in October 1952, and finally Bernard James, named after his paternal grandfather, rounded out the family in 1954.
Mary worked at William Engel lamp company in the fifties and sixties, long before working moms became the norm. She enjoyed her friends and worked hard while raising 4 kids, then helped raise 7 grandchildren, plus everyone else in the neighborhood’s kids, particularly the Toomey family, whose older boys were best friends with the Cain boys, and lest we forget, the Chestnut family of girls.
She was generous to a fault. Whenever she received a gift, regardless of the value, she would give it away to anyone who admired it. Whatever she had to give, she gave freely.
Mary loved the little things in life: children, small toys, trinkets, a good cup of tea in a little cup, and especially little roses. She had a great sense of humour which would pop out when you least expected it.
She persevered all her life and in her later years became quite determined to make it to 100. Mary saw many things in her 100-plus years: the Great Depression, WW II, the Korean War, putting a man on the moon, and many political and economic changes. Among them were some personal losses with the passing of her husband Jack in 1991 and of two of her children, John in 1996 and Michael in 2013.
Mary passed peacefully at home as was her wish. Mary will be missed by friends, neighbors and family: son Bernard and daughter Margaret; ; grandchildren Kelly, Lori, Ian, Jessica, Ryan, Kyle and Amy; great-grandchildren Christopher, Samantha, Melissa, Alexandria, Kiira, and Caleb; and the latest additions, great-great-granddaughters Paisley and Charlie.
Friends may visit at the Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home & Chapel, 467 Sherbourne Street (Sherbourne south of Wellesley) on Sunday, March 18, 2018 from 2-5 and 6-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 19, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 1041 Bloor Street West, Toronto, Ontario. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Thornhill, Ontario.
If so desired, donations to the Alzheimers Association or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family as your expression of sympathy.
May she rest in well-deserved peace.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Miss Mary Ann Cain 2018.source
