Wideman, Mildred Emma Louise (nee Foote)
1911 to 2018
Mildred Emma Louise Wideman (nee Foote) was born August 17, 1911 and passed away peacefully at her residence December 19, 2018. She was in her 108th year. Mildred was predeceased in January 1996 by her husband of fifty-six years, Lorne Martin Wideman, former Principal of Birch Cliff Public School in Scarborough, Ontario. She is survived by her three sons, Ronald Lorne (Cynthia Newman), David Mark (Patricia McDowell), and Larry Steven
(Maureen Murphy). Mildred’s grandchildren are Stephanie, Benjamin, Derek, and Rebecca Wideman. She is also survived by nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Mildred was born at the family
farm near Stouffville, Ontario. Her parents were Septimus Herbert Foote and Cora Robina Foote (nee Young). She is also predeceased by her siblings D. Grace Foote-Powell, Walter J. Foote, Samuel D. Foote, and Joseph R. Foote. Mildred’s life spanned an era of tremendous technological change. She remembered winter rides to Stouffville in her family’s horse-drawn sleigh, snug in buffalo robes and with warmed stones at her feet. She attended Markham High School and Toronto Normal School, graduating in 1930 with a teaching certificate. She then taught in one-room schools in Aurora and Keswick, Ontario before marrying in 1940 to become a full-time homemaker and loving mother to her growing family. After her husband passed away, Mildred continued to be an active member of the Birch Cliff community. She lived in the family home until the age of 98 when she moved to a retirement residence. Mildred was considered expert in English smocking and for many years hosted the “Ten Thimbles” quilting circle
in support of local service groups. She was also a respected member of the Retired Women Teachers of Ontario (RWTO). In her later years, she contributed to RWTO’s book, Chalk, Challenge and Change: Stories from Women Teachers in Ontario, 1920-1979.
A visitation will be held at McDougall & Brown Funeral Home, 2900 Kingston Road, Scarborough on Tuesday, January 9 2019 at 10 a.m. with a Funeral Service to take place at 11 a.m. and a reception to follow. Information about visitation and funeral service may be found at www.mcdbrown.ca. Interment will be at Stouffville Cemetery. Condolences may be left on line via McDougall and Brown. In lieu of flowers, donations to Birchcliff Bluffs United Church or a charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.
