OBITUARY
Michael Laurie Comeau
January 7, 1944 – December 9, 2018
Mike passed away on December 9th, 2018 at his home on Denman Island, BC.
He was born in Edmonton, Alberta on January 7th, 1944. Mike contracted polio at the age of 10 and spent a year in an Iron Lung which aided his recovery. He graduated from King Edward High School in Vancouver BC and went on to become a Radio Operator. Mike worked in the Artic on the Dew (Distant Early Warning) Line before going back to school to complete his teaching degree from the University of British Columbia. He taught Electronics in high schools in Vancouver for several years and as an instructor through Distance Education. He had a deep love for Fishing and Scuba Diving and spent a lot of his spare time enjoying this passion and sharing it with his family. in 1982, Mike moved his wife and children from Vancouver, BC to Denman Island, BC where he purchased the General Store. This began his 25 year journey as a Post Master and Store Keeper, among many other roles in the community. He was well known on Denman Island for his generosity and his love of telling jokes. Many a customer was regaled with his stories and jokes while shipping at the Denman Store whether they wanted to be or not. Mike fought his illnesses, throughout his life, with valiant effort and as abundance of strength. Before retiring from the Denman Island General Store, he contracted Post Polio Syndrome which he fought for many years ultimately landing him with many hours of his days on a respirator. In the end, all he wanted was to die at home on Denman Island, a place he loved like no other.
Mike Comeau was predeceased by his father, Joseph Amedee Comeay and his mother Patricia Laurie.
He is survived by his wife, Diana, his daughters Teresa (Barry) and Virginia (Rodney), his grandchildren Kieran and Marina, his twin brother Terry (Lois) and nephews Timothy and Quentin.
Mike will be lovingly remembered for his big heart and his need for helping others.
A celebration of life will be held in the beginning of February 2019. Donations to the Provincial Respiratory Outreach Program would be appreciated.
