It is with great sadness we announce the passing our brother, Michael ‘Mickey’ Martin Herney of Membertou First Nations. Michael passed away early in the morning of December 12, 2018 with a family member by his side at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Michael was 59 years young.
Michael loved Membertou. Growing up, he enjoyed playing hockey and fastball with his brothers and friends. Michael was one of the founding members of the Sons of Membertou Drum Group. Michael had a love for Karate and had worked towards a Black Belt. Michael was businessman and a graduate of Sydney Academy.He had worked on earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Cape Breton University. Michael was kind and very helpful and believed in God. And Education. His favourite saying was “don’t be a fool, stay in school.” He had a strong faith in God and always said “you are never alone, God is with you.”
Michael is survived by his sisters; Linda Wells (Lawrence), of Membertou; Sylvia Herney, Membertou, brothers; Bruce Herney (Sandra), Membertou, Jeffery Herney of Saskatchewan and Clifford Copage, Membertou. Mickey will be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews and his godfather, Fred Googoo.
Michael is predeceased by his parents, Charlie Herney and Miltilda (Googoo) Herney; sisters, Theresa Mudgeride, Rodina Christmas, Hazel Herney, Bernadine Herney and brother Earl Herney.
Visitation for Mr. Herney will take place on Monday after 7 pm at the residence of his niece Lynn Wells, 152 Putus Awti, Membertou. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 19 at 11 am at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Salite will take place at Membertou Trade & Convention Center after burial.
