Obituary for
Merle Baumhour
Baumhour, Merle – With broken hearts the family announces the sudden passing of Merle Baumhour on July 17, 2018, at the age of 58.
Merle was born in Haileybury on October 20, 1959, the fourth child of Pearl (Veley) and the late Archie Baumhour. Shortly after he was born, the family moved to a farm in Bancroft, Ontario, where Merle developed a great love for the outdoors, hunting and fishing.
After 14 years in Bancroft, the family returned north to Haileybury, where Merle met the love of his life, Donna Windover, whom he dated throughout high school and married February 24, 1979, the first couple to be married at the newly built Haileybury Pentecostal Asembly.
In 1984 Merle and Donna moved to Campbellford, Ontario, where they built their life together and raised their daughter Aime, who was born March 11, 1987. They previously lost an infant daughter, Amanda, born October 16, 1983 and passed away October 29, 1983.
Aime married Jeffrey Hetherington on May 17, 2014 pleasing Merle to no end as he now had a “son” to hunt and fish with.
After high school, Merle worked at several lumber yards and a boat manufacturing company, eventually starting his own contracting business, which he worked at for over 20 years. He was a hard worker, exremely meticulous, taking great care at whatever task he took, including building furniture for customers or his wife and daughter. He was also a tender hearted man, devoted to his family. Merle’s love for hunting and fishing remained with him always, and oh how he loved to tell his fishing stories.
After 34 years in the Campbellford area, and almost ready to retire, he and Donna made the move back to Haileybury June 1st of this year to be near their daughter Aime and her husband Jeff who had already moved north, his mother and the rest of their family. Having grown up on a farm, Merle always loved gardening. He was so happy to have the time and place to plant a large potato patch and vegetable garden this year.
Merle is predeceased by his father Archie, daughter Amanda, sister Janet O/Brien, brother Douglas, brother-in-law Francis O’Brien, nephew James and niece Alissa. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Donna, daughter Aime, son-in-law Jeff, brother Bruce (Dawn), sister Donna (Ron) Beauchamps and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family of the late Merle Baumhour will receive family and friends Tuesday, July 24, from 7 to 9 pm at the Temiskaming Pentecostal Church, West Road, Haileybury, and also from 10 to 11 am Wednesday, July 25, with a celebration of Merle’s life to follow at 11 am. Private family interment will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Haileybury.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto, a cause close to Merle and Donna’s hearts.
