Obituary Overview
Maureen Mary Percival
Maureen Mary Percival
(née Mullin)
Maureen “Moe” passed away on December 12, 2018 at Hamilton General Hospital, due to complications following surgery. She was 79.
Moe was born on July 13, 1939 to parents Alexander and Stella (née St. Jean) Mullin in Vankleek Hill, Ontario. In that year, the 13th fell on a Thursday, but with characteristic spunk, Moe always insisted she was born on a “lucky” Friday the 13th, and that’s exactly how she approached life. Whatever the obstacle, Moe found some lucky charm or four-leaf clover to see her through.
Moe loved family. She married Charles Dixon on July 30th 1960, with whom she had four beloved children: Allen (Monika), Mary-Ann (Grant Roedding), Michelle (Joe Parent) and Joseph “Joey” (Christine Case), and five beloved grandchildren: Emily, Colette, Madelaine, Keara and Mackayla. She remarried and is pre-diseased by Jack Percival. Lucky in love, Moe enjoyed many happy years with her companion and true soul-mate, Victor Cassis. She welcomed into her heart his son Tory (Maureen) and grandson Cole. Moe is survived by her sister Mary-Ann and predeceased by both parents and her siblings: Janet, Johnny, Danny, Michael, Patrick, Margaret and Frankie (Francis).
Never afraid of hard work, Moe was up every day long before the “sun burns a hole in your arse”, tackling projects, chores and adventures with vigour. When work was done, if not hard asleep on the couch, Moe found her second wind and was off dancing or at a sing-along jazz club
From a very early age, she learned to use wit and might to fend for herself and fiercely defend those she loved. An original “foodie”, you could always count on Moe to discover some new culinary treat. Among many cherished childhood memories, a favourite was about springtime adventures with siblings catching frogs in fields near their home and cooking up frog legs over an open fire in some found tin can or pot. “They’re a delicacy, you know!”
She was proud of her combined French-Irish heritage. When Moe had a particularly important point to make, it was delivered with an Irish lilt; when piqued, a few choice words “en français” provided warning. Moe’s white-hot passion and incisive humour cut through the most intense battles, usually via gut-splitting laughter – the intensity of a “good fight” always sharpening her sense of the absurd.
A true force of nature, Moe shared her “strawberry blond” nostalgia for what, in truth was a harsh childhood and ventured “flaming red” passages of adulthood. In her far too untimely final days, Moe, and most of all, our beloved “Mum”, “Ma” and “Gramma Moe”, had arrived at the “rich auburn” serenity of pure love and light. We are forever grateful.
