OBITUARY
Mary Eileen Oxner
December 31, 1945 – December 7, 2018
Mary Eileen Oxner, 72, of Halifax, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 7, 2018, surrounded by her loving family, as was often the case.
Eileen was born on December 31, 1945. She was the eldest daughter in a family of ten children. Eileen grew up on Chebucto Road in Halifax, in a home filled with love and laughter.
She married her true love, Doug Oxner, on February 12, 1966 and started a large family of her own, soon after. Eileen worked for many years at the IWK Health Centre, while raising her children in the same childhood home that she grew up in.
Eileen is survived by her devoted husband Doug, her children Glen (Stacey), Doug (Marlene), Johnny (April), Louita (Scott), Rachelle (Dwayne), Peter (Kathy) and Chad; sisters, Ena (Wayne) Branch, Carole (Greg) Martell, Elizabeth Mason, Darlene (Brad) Higginbothom, and brothers, Wally (Carole) Martin, Kenny (Peggy) Martin, and Bob Martin. She was the proud grandmother of Joseph, Brianna, Johnathan, Brandon, Chloe, Jeremy, Taylor, Ashleigh and Cameron; and many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her Mum and Dad, John and Ena Martin; and her brothers Billy and John Martin.
For Eileen, her family was everything. Together with Doug, they raised seven children. She was always eager to tell anyone who would listen about her five wonderful sons and two beautiful daughters. Eileen was a humble Christian, and attended St. Theresa’s Parish, before moving to Clayton Park and joining St. Benedict’s Parish. She was very active as a young girl. She was a figure skater and a swimmer. She was very proud of the fact that she swam across the Northwest Arm when she was 15 years old! More recently she enjoyed watching tennis and hockey. However, her greatest joy was always watching her children and their families grow.
The family would like to sincerely thank the nurses and staff at the Victoria General Hospital, 8th floor and the 7.2 ICU unit at the QEII Infirmary.
The family will receive friends at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive in Halifax Wednesday, December 12, 2-4pm and 6-8pm. A funeral service will be held at Saint Theresa’s Catholic Church, North Street, Thursday, December 13 at 11am with a reception to follow in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Eileen’s name to the Canadian Cancer Society. To make online condolences please visit: www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
