Obituary for Martha Wens
Martha Wens, 95, of Winnipeg passed peacefully on February 9, 2018 at Extendicare Oakview Place. Martha was born December 16, 1922 in Rueckenau Ukraine, the daughter of Jacob and Katharina Krueger.
Martha grew up on a farm where she found her love for animals. Martha loved being with friend’s people described Martha as a very social teenager.
Martha had a very special bond with her Grandpa Franz Krueger. He loved her very much and she loved him. When she came home from school, she went right away to him and they would talk about what happened in school. He loved hearing all about it.
As a teenager Martha was sent to house holding school in Germany. From Germany Martha immigrated to Canada in November of 1948. In Winnipeg, Martha stayed with her Uncle Dave and Aunt Mary. Martha’s first job was working in the sewing factory. While working in the factory Martha saved up enough money to go to hairdressing school on the encouragement of her Aunt Mary.
In the late 1950’s, Martha married the love of her life Carl Wens. They moved alot as Carl was in the military. Martha and Carl finally settled down in Winnipeg where Martha worked at the American House as a hairdresser. She opened her own hairdressing business in the basement of her home when her son Robert was born in 1964.
In addition to raising a son and running a business Martha loved planting flowers and eating the wonderful vegetables that she grew. Martha did a lot of work for the church from sunday school teacher, helping make sandwiches for the hungry people in the downtown of Winnipeg, to maintaining the costumes for the church’s pageant, to setting up communion and working in the church’s nursery. Martha did a lot of volunteering for organizations such as CancerCare, handing out food and drinks to the patients receiving chemotherapy. She Canvassed door to door for the Cancer Society, volunteered numerous times at Robert’s school in library and school outings. People would comment to Robert, “Your Mom is such a nice person.” Martha spent alot of winter evenings working the drink and snack stand at the community centre. When not at the community centre Martha loved to do different crafts from painting to needlepoint, crocheting wonderful pictures.
In 1986 Carl passed away. Martha soon joined the Order of the Eastern Star and was very active in the order, attending conferences out of town and taking on high level positions.
Martha is survived by her son Robert; 2 cousins and 3 nephews; and a number of other relatives and close friends.
There will be graveside service on Thursday February 15th at 10:00 a.m. at Brookside Cemetery.
