Forever Remembered
Darby’s family is saddened to announce her death in Calgary on February 22, 2018, a few weeks short of her 103rd birthday. She was predeceased by her husband John (Buck) Buckley-Jones, and by her sister and brothers. Darby is survived by her children and their spouses: Dilys in Ottawa; Deborah and Russell Waddell in Calgary; Allison Day and Richard Morgan in Canmore; and David and Margaret Buckley-Jones in Courtenay; as well as her grandchildren: Joanna Day Buckingham and her husband Brent in Canmore; Megan Waddell and her partner Adam Lyons in London, UK; Sarah Buckley-Jones and her partner Brodie Pratt in Courtenay. She is also survived by her great-granddaughters Monika and Peyton Buckingham, her sister-in-law Kay Marshall in Windermere, Ontario, and several nieces and nephews.
Darby was born in Toronto and grew up in Oakville, where she met Buck after he emigrated from Wales. They married in 1939 and spent the years until his retirement from the Bank of Montreal living in Ottawa, London, Brantford, Kingston, Lethbridge, Calgary and Montreal. She was Buck’s loving partner and support until his death in 1981.
She was a cook and hostess par excellence and thoroughly enjoyed a very dry martini before lunch and Orange Pekoe tea. She was an avid reader in three languages, an enthusiastic golfer until she was in her late 80s, a world traveler and a keen bridge player.
Darby loved classical music and opera, even though she couldn’t carry a tune, and was a faithful concert and ballet-goer for many years. She also loved a good argument (She held strong opinions about many things.) and was passionate about proper English usage, particularly grammar and spelling.
Sadly, Darby suffered from dementia in her later years, and her family is very grateful to many caregivers who have helped look after her since 2010, including the Home Care team and the staff at Fountains of Mission, as well as the caring staff at Southwood Hospice and Southwood Care Centre.
