Obituary of Marion Gray
Marion Katharine Gray of Peterborough passed away in Ajax on October 9th. Fond of telling her age she would have told you, “I’m going to be 96, you know.” The retired school teacher was a woman of sincere conviction and great strength. She was adored for her frankness and blunt humour. Marion was, “the captain of her own ship,” which took her many places around the country and globe including 5 years in revolutionary Africa with her only daughter, Joan. Of her many titles in life her fondest was Grandma. To her two grandchildren, Janine and Jimmy, she was the sun, moon and stars but there were many others who lovingly called her the same.
Marion is predeceased by her mother – Luella Main (McGill), father- William Foster Main, brother-Carlyle Allison (Al) Main, husbands- Clifford Ross McTaggart and James Fredrick Gray and daughter- Joan Katharine Carleton (Gray). She is remembered by granddaughter- Janine Carleton and husband Christopher Reiley, grandson- James Carleton, great-grandchildren Wesley and Violet, sister- Vera Fitzpatrick (Main), sister-in-law- Kay Main (Watson), Nieces- Kim McConnell (Fitzpatrick) and husband Michael McConnell, Christine Main and Valerie Main, nephews- Craig Fitzpatrick and wife Karla van Hoeckel and Blake Fitzpatrick and wife Debbie Sharp, many great and (wonderful) nieces and nephews- Jessie, Allison, Emily, Evan, Sarah, Abbey and Skylar, son-in-law- John Carleton and great granddoggie- Maddison.
True to herself Grandma left explicit instructions following her departure. Her 90th birthday was the occasion to celebrate her and as such there will not be a service. Instead she asks that you, “have a nice lunch with wine (or a drink) and toast your old grandma.”
