Obituary for
Marguerite Pigeon
Mary Marguerite Pigeon (nee: Mc Dougald) April 25th, 1920 – October 19th, 2018
A long life beautifully lived.
In her 95th year, Marguerite passed on peacefully to her Lord God, at The Brantford General Hospital, held in her daughter Maureen’s arm, as old hymns, songs and lullabies were gently sung to her. Marg passed after a very brief stay in hospital for age related medical complications.
Marg is predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Ken Pigeon (2008), and her son Ken Craig Pigeon (2017). She will be daily and preciously missed by her daughter, Maureen Pigeon (Mo), her daughter-in-law Miriam, grandson Zachary; and the beloved family dogs, Kilty and Bun Bun, who also visited her in hospital several times. She was blessed in her life by close relationships with her husband, children, all of her grandsons, Dustin, Dallas and Zach, and enjoyed seeing the youngest Pigeon, Amelia, born auburn- haired like herself, almost 2 years ago to grandson, Zachary & Felicia.
‘Mikey’ (Marg’s family nickname), was also predeaced by two brothers, Jim and William Mc Dougald, and three sisters, Betty, Donna, and Dorothy, and a number of very dear life-long friends. We expect she is enjoying a grand reunion now.
Marguerite was a devoted home-maker extraordinaire; a master baker – her apple pies and sweets were so delicious, and her cooking was an offering of edible love. Marg also had a career working for years in fashion shops, in the Niagara Region and Brantford. Music was a life-long love for Mikey, singing on radio in quartets with her sisters, and friends, Betty Ion, Helen Pell, and Joy Lawrence, and then with church choirs for decades, and The Brant Belle-Dears. Mikey was still dancing a little to music in her kitchen, and even her hospital room with nurses on B-8, right close to the end of her life.
Marguerite loved her husband and her family deeply, faithfully and with kindness and devotion. She and Ken had many happy years camping and living with nature, trailering all across Canada, and taking trips to warm places with good friends Don and Betty. A highlight was a trip back to Europe for Ken and Marg for the 60th Anniversary of the End of WWII, where Ken had served in the Air Force during the war, and Marg kept the home fires going. They wrote letters back and forth almost daily for three years.
A grand highlight two years ago, was a cross country driving trip with her daughter through the Rockies and right to Vancouver Island. Mikey loved seeing the mountains again, the fun of shared rooms on the way, a day in Banff, coming and going, and day trips to places like Salt Spring Island, Island fairs, beaches and parks on Vancouver Island every weekend with her daughter. Marguerite recounted that trip for a long time after, and said she loved every minute of it, even driving through a blizzard on the trip home. It was a treasured time and for both.
Marg was a prayerful woman and lived out the love of Jesus Whom she followed, in the best sense of the word: kind, patient, just, caring, loving, loyal, and steadfast.
Marguerite’s end-of-life was the completion of a Sacred Circle. She birthed her second child on October 19th, a few decades ago. Then she passed on Maureen’s birthday, Oct. 19th, Margy held in her daughters arms, prayed for, blessed, sung to, and slipped peacefully across the river from this life to the wonderful next life; a full and sacred circle.
Thank-you to the medical team of B-8, the Clinical Manager, and Chaplain John and Dawn who visited Mary; and the incredibly kind-hearted interactions the nurses had with her during her stay there. Thank-you also to her nurses, Dr.’s and Unit Manager, for supporting my mother in keeping her comfortable during her end-of-life journey, and for the whole team co-creating a peaceful, calm, respectful, kind palliative care environment for Mary Marguerite and family at her sacred end-of-life. Marguerite’s wish for Cremation has taken place where she rested at Dennis Toll Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Mary Marguerite’s Life and Christian Memorial will talk place this Sunday, October 28th 2 p.m. in the Chapel (2nd floor) at Brantford General Hospital. In lieu of flowers, we invite donations to Brant Animal Aid Foundation, www.brantanimalaid.com or The Brant Community Healthcare Foundation, BGH.
“Softly the leaves of memory fall, gently we gather and treasure them all; Unseen, unheard, you are always near; So loved and so missed, so very dear.”
