Len Kirby, born March 20, 1939, passed away Nov 29, 2018. Len passed quietly, at the Carewest Sarcee Hospice Calgary, in the company of his children Darcy, Diana, Brad and daughter in-law Lorraine. Len succumbed to a re-occurrence of colon disease and lung cancer, which he had down played while caring for his wife, Ruth, in her last days.
Dad was born and raised in Redland, Alberta completing his primary schooling in Standard. He went on to obtain his mechanics license in 1961 while under the apprenticeship of “Larkin & Isaac”. He was proud of his “Aquatics Instructor” certification which he held until 1970.
Dad enjoyed life on the road as a truck driver. Additionally, he was a service station operator, boat builder, craftsman and tireless water sport instructor. Dad`s love of performance machines was surpassed only by his love for us kids. We still can’t believe he sold his corvette so he could buy a motor home for use on family camping trips and race weekends. We enjoyed dad’s performance cars and boats (sometimes secretly). Even Mom enjoyed them!
We especially cherish the last two months with him. Though either wheel chair bound or bed ridden he remained poised, upbeat and gracious. He appreciated and embraced the last days with us and all who visited, never running out of stories to share or advise to give. In his last days dad came to understand a lot about us and we in turn learned more about him.
Leonard has left behind children Darcy Kirby (Lorraine Wise) of Calgary, Diane Templeton (Robert) of Cochrane and Brad Kirby (Melody) of Calgary. Len will be missed by grandchildren Cody, Jordan and Jamie Templeton and Mitchell and Marcus Kirby, all of Calgary. Additionally, Len leaves behind brothers Donald Kirby (Betty) of Calgary and Richard Kirby (Bobbi) of Drumheller.
Len is predeceased by his wife of 58 years Ruth (August 2018), brother Ken, half-brother Charles Kirby Jr., and Half-Sister Ruth Legg. Special Thanks to the caregivers at Sarcee Hospice. Dad loved these folks. Their attention to his care was inspiring and heartwarming.
A Celebration of Len’s Life will be held at Mountain View Funeral Home, (Arbor Lounge, 1605 – 100 Street SE, Calgary) on Saturday, December 8, 2018 from 2:00 pm. to 4:00 p.m. To express condolences, please visit: www.mountainviewmemorial.ca.
