Obituary for Junior Smith Rufus Loughead
“Junior” Smith Rufus Loughead – Age 82 passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at CEHHC, Truro on March 10, 2018. Born December 2, 1935, to Smith and Hazel (Burgess) Loughead in Lower Truro, Junior grew up in Beaverbrook helping out on his family farm. As a young man he later took a year off school to help in the house while his mother was ill.
Junior was lucky enough to meet his future wife through friends and went on to build a home and raise their two children together. Junior was known to most as being a quiet, soft spoken man who could fix just about anything that needed fixing. Junior has owned, fixed, rebuilt and sold more cars than most dealerships combined. He enjoyed snowmobiling and watching baseball, but he especially loved his little piece of Heaven on Earth, his cottage at Shortt’s Lake, where he spent many summers with Kaye and the kids.
Junior was a very proud father and tried to instill many of his values in his kids. He was always there for his kids whether it was those memorable driving lessons with Leanne or running Craig around to hockey. When the kids were older he was still there to help with building projects at Craig and Tanya’s house or fixing and painting cars for Leanne and Mark.
Junior was pleased when his children were married but that was no comparison to when his granddaughters started coming along. Junior loved being a grandfather and spent hours entertaining the girls when they were with him. Things like trips on the lawn tractor around the field in the backyard or being towed around on a car hood with the snowmobile. Pushing them on the swing at the lake and jumping on the trampoline (or couch) with them, Junior was a big kid when he was with the girls.
Junior was fortunate to love again when he found Helen. He and Helen made the most of their time together going to dances, music events and in the summers relaxing at the cottage. They lived most of their time together at the house in Onslow but had moved to their apartment shortly before he took ill. Helen continued to be Junior’s source of strength in the following 2 years, ensuring he did make it home again for a time and then ensuring he was well cared for everyday in the nursing home.
Junior was a mechanic and enjoyed working at Weatherbee’s Garage and Auto Glass, Pye Chevold and Lewis Auto Sales. He was a proud member of the Onslow-Belmont Fire Brigade, the Lower Onslow United Church and a 26 year member of the Goodtimes Seniors Dance Club.
Junior is survived by his children, Craig (Tanya Creelman), Leanne (Mark Beaver); granddaughters, Noelle, Faith and Samantha; sister, Annie Mae Fields and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his loving mate, Helen, her daughter Kathy Christensen, son, Douglas Neil and her grandchildren, Danielle and Josh (Natasha).
Junior is predeceased by his wife Kaye (Hanes); brothers, Home, Eugene and Edgar and sister, Lillian.
There will be a Celebration of Junior’s Life Sunday, March 18, 2018 at the Onslow-Belmont Fire Hall between 2 – 5 pm. Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Special Thank you to all the health care providers at VON and Cedarstone Enhanced Care.
