McCARNEY, John Graham: (Long time Peterborough Lawyer, Lifelong Cathedral of St. Peter-in-Chains parishioner, Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus): Peacefully at his home on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 in his 88th year. John, beloved husband of 58 years to Fran McKinley. Loving and devoted father of Elizabeth McCarney (Shawn Hodgins), Martha McCarney, Michael, and Jane McCarney (Tim Rodomar). Cherished Grandfather of Althea. Dear brother of Dr. Robert McCarney of Oakville, and brother -in-law of Catherine Kittel, and Barbara Hogg (Bill). Lovingly remembered by his nieces, nephews, cousins, and in a special way his friends Ranald and Shirley Pearson for their friendship, kindness, and daily visits to John with holy communion. Son of the late Jack McCarney and Pearl Kemp. John was a devout Catholic whose deep faith was a constant and abiding source of comfort to him. Born and raised in Peterborough, Ontario, he attended St. Mary’s and St Peter’s elementary schools continuing onto St Peter’s High School until grade 12. He completed his secondary education at Regiopolis College in Kingston, Ontario in 1944 and from there enrolled in a liberal arts program at Concordia University in Montreal. Despite his enthusiasm for sports, pranks and late night hamburgers, John fulfilled his requirements for graduation, subsequently making his way to Osgoode Hall School of Law. He was called to the Bar in 1959 and practiced law in Peterborough for more almost 50 years, both in his own practice and later as Counsel with Lockington Lawless Fitzpatrick. John retired from a long and dedicated career that he loved, stating many times to his family that he was excited to go to his office each and every day he served his clients. In April 2005, he hung up his robes and retired to enjoy his other passions; golf, travel and time with his granddaughter. An active member of the community, John served on many Boards and Committees throughout his lifetime in Peterborough, most notably as a member of the Trent University Board of Governors and in various capacities with the Sisters of St Joseph to continue their mission of community service and health care. His dedication to the Sisters was a lifelong commitment that he carried on from the example set by own his parents’ devotion to the work of this religious community.
