Harvey Edmund Richard
1947-2018
Richard, Harvey Edmund Age 70 of
Charlos Cove. Harvey passed away peacefully on March 30, 2018, after
surviving three heart attacks, a stroke and getting kicked in the head
by a horse (he felt no ill will towards the horse). Harvey
was a son of the late Margaret (Manette) and Edmund Richard. He was 70
years old, one of the oldest of his male siblings, which he would
share with an equal measure of sadness and pride. Harvey is survived
by his children, Dwayne (Lisa), Donna (Derek) and Lori (Neil);
grandchildren, Jacob and Cole; brother, Cecil (Wendy); sisters, Rena
(Paul) Cashin; Edith Cashin; Myrtle Johnson; Theresa Harris (David);
brothers-in-law, Sonny (Mary) Surette; Wayne (Karen) Surette; Leander
(Mary) Surette; sisters-in-law, Gloria Richard and Ruth Surette; a
multitude of nieces and nephews. Harvey was predeceased by
his wife Rose Marie (Surette), who he ironically met for the first
time in Toronto when hanging out at Willie Avery’s, a
favorite party spot for the Crew in Toronto. Ironic, because she grew
up just 7 miles down the road in Port Felix. Shortly thereafter they
moved home to Charlos Cove, got married and bought what would be the
homestead. No mortgage was needed, as the $250 purchase price was paid
in cash, they went on to enjoy 39 years of marriage, and now they are
together again at last. He was also predeceased by brothers; Ervin;
Thomas; Donald; sister-in-law, Carol; brothers-in-law, Leonard Cashin;
Huntley Johnson; Richard Surette; Fred Harris; and his best
friend Gordon “Lovely Grub” Pettipas. He loved food,
Black Diamond rum, his wife and children, hunting and fishing, and
tinkering in “Harvey’s Workshop”, and not
necessarily in that order. He could be found in a good mood, with a
smile on his face, and always a kind word. If you could get him in a
particularly gregarious mood he’d tell you stories about his
early exploits, particularly in Toronto. He’d have a laugh
and maybe even let a few secrets out, like who was really living with
whom, tattoo debacles and stories about particularly infamous family
members! Harvey was a jack of all trades, who never turned away friend
nor stranger in need. He could be found welding, fabricating trailers
and wood splitters, repairing boats, wiring, and/or fixing vehicles at
any given time. Carpentry was only his day job, which he did at
various locations over the years, including PEI, the City of Halifax,
the fish-plant in Canso, Tor Bay Boat Builders, Seawind Landing
Country Inn, Sable Island Natural Gas facilities in Goldboro, Richard
Hull’s Boat shop and, finally, the Canso Causeway just to
name a few. He was a proud member of the Laborers Union Local 615. Dad
“pretty well finished grade 7”, but a lack of an
education never held him back. Many a vehicle was fixed in his
backyard garage, home visits were made to fix water pumps and such,
and he even delivered salt cod to bring down fevers (not sure if or
how that one worked out). An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed spending
time in Doyle’s Lake and always provided for his family with
the spoils of his labors. Harvey was a man who did the best he could
with what he had, always putting others before himself. He will not
soon be forgotten, particularly since the late Frank Pellerin honored
him by naming the road to his camp “Harvey’s
Road”. Maybe Scotia Metal Products might rename their blue
roofing “Harvey Blue”, as it’s
affectionately known in the Cove? In keeping with dad’s
wishes there will be no visitation. Funeral service will be in St.
Joseph’s Catholic Church, Charlos Cove at 11 am on Monday,
April 2, 2018 with Father Frank Pellerin officiating. Committal and
reception will follow. Family flowers only please. Funeral
arrangements are under the dignified and compassionate care of the
G.W. Giffin Funeral Home, 17545 Highway 316, Country Harbour. On-line
condolences may be made at www.gwgiffin.com.
