Obituary Overview
Gisèle Loyer (Née Gendron)
It is with heavy hearts the family wishes to announce the passing of Gisèle, who passed away peacefully with family by her side on December 30, 2017 at the Health Sciences Centre.
She is pre-deceased by her parents Juliette and Joseph Gendron, her brother Jacques Gendron, and her faithful dogs Muffin, Tashi, and Bart.
Left to cherish Gisèle’s memory is her beloved husband of 48 years, Guy; her son Joe (Christine Dubois); her daughter Julie Karatchuk (Daryl); her grandchildren, Serik, Anika, and Jean-Luc; her siblings, Jean-Pierre (Betté), Monique St. Amour, Suzanne Paradis (Gilbert), Lise Méthot (Claude), François (Evelyn Picton), Anne-Marie Briglio (John), as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Gisèle was born on November 10, 1946 in Hull, Quebec. She met her husband Guy in 1968 at a concert. After a brief courtship, they married on May 17, 1969. They began their family in 1971 with a cute baby girl, they named Julie and two years later, their son Jocelyn (Joe) was born. Life was busy for the young family, and it got even busier when Guy’s job with the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa, transferred him to the newly opened Mint in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1973. They finally settled in Lorette, MB in 1976 where they raised their family. Once the kids were of school age, Gisèle went to work as a Librarian at the Lorette Collegiate, and followed suit as Secretary, where she worked at the school for 21 years.
As founder and President of Association des Commité Culturel de Manitoba, Gisèle was very active in the French community volunteering for Festival du Voyageur, working the ‘food tent’ for the Chevaliers de Colombs and organizing various events including Beer and Skits, and Wine and Cheese Evenings for the Commité Culturel de Lorette.
To spend more time with her children, Gisèle led the 4H group Sewing Club in Lorette to be involved with Julie’s hobbies. And though she wasn’t the best at it, she also took up golfing to be with Guy and Joe on the greens.
Along with her love of family, Gisèle had a special place in her heart for the cabin in Lac Du Bonnet. They bought the cabin in 1989 and it wasn’t long before Gisèle and Guy were volunteering on the Wendigo Bay Committee. She had various positions on the Board over the years, but her specialty was Social Committee Head, welcoming all new owners to the Camp. Throughout the summer you could find her planting flower beds, painting rocks, picking blueberries, walking the trails, but mostly fishing. She loved being in the boat and spending an afternoon on the lake. Weekends where her children and grandchildren were present were her favorites.
In 2013 Gisèle was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia, which is a VERY rare blood disease that affects your red blood cells and platelet counts. During the past four years, she had over 800 blood and platelet transfusions. This disease also unfortunately took her sense of sight, at which time her devoted husband, Guy, became her pillar of support. Gisèle was a devout Roman Catholic and her faith is what kept her strong during the past few years.
The family wishes to thank her long time doctor, Dr. Hughes, and her hematology specialist, Dr. Don Houston and all the wonderful staff in Clinic 5 and the Hematology Department, 3rd floor, at CancerCare Manitoba for all they’ve done over the past four years. Thank you also to the GH4 ward at Health Sciences Center for all of their care and compassion in Gisèle’s final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gisèle’s honor to Canadian Blood Services, 777 William Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 3R4 or at www.blood.ca.
Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at Glen Lawn Funeral Home with interment to follow at a later date, in Les Jardins du Souvenir, Notre Dame de Hull, Quebec.
