Obituary of Gerry Smeenk
SMEENK: ‘Gerry’ Gerhardus Hendricus –
A resident of Blenheim, Gerry Smeenk passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday January 4, 2018 at the age of 89.
Born in Haarle, The Netherlands, Gerry was the son of the late Hendricus and Anthonia (Spoolders) Smeenk.
Gerry served in the Armed Forces in the Netherlands for two years, before he and his beloved wife Mary (Smeulders) of 66 years immigrated to Canada in 1952.
Together, they raised nine children: Henry Smeenk (Marj Dixon), Cathy Cofell (Murray Swartz), Toni Gernaey (Bill), Mary Shufelt (Spencer), John Smeenk (Lou-Ann), Frank Smeenk (Monica Sterling), Josefina Falco (Pete) and the late Gerry and Anthony Smeenk.
Proud Grandpa and Opa to 22 grandchildren. Great-grandfather to many great-grandchildren.
Dear brother to Tony Smeenk, Annie Smeenk, Maritje Smeenk and Doortje Rosenkamp. Predeceased by his brothers Ted and Johannes and his sister Riek.
Also missed by many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.
Gerry was a member of St. Vincent de Paul for over 20 years and had served as Past President. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 185 Blenheim.
Family will receive friends at the McKinlay Funeral Home, 141 Park Street, Blenheim on Monday, January 8, 2018 from 2:00 – 4:00pm and 7:00 – 9:00pm. Vigil Prayers will be held Monday at 7:00pm.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, 95 Malborough Street North, Blenheim at 10:00am on Tuesday, January 9, 2018. Interment to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Blenheim.
Donations made in memory of Gerry to the St. Vincent de Paul would be appreciated.
