Obituary Overview
George Seaton
This kind and loving man was born October 11, 1936 in Aberfeldy, Scotland to Unwin and Elizabeth (nee Matheson) Seaton. His early education was at Breadalbane Academy where he was always near the top of his class. Two years of National Service was served with the Royal Airforce. Upon being demobbed, he was employed at The Royal Bank of Scotland. From there “The Company of Gentleman Adventurers Trading into Hudson’s Bay” were smart enough to avail themselves of his service and thus began his life in Canada. First as a clerk/trainee moving on to “factor” stationed in Aklavik, Reindeer Station, Artic Red River, Fort Good Hope, Inuvik (known then as Aklavik E3), Fort Franklin and Fort MacPherson, all in NWT. Then Oxford House and Garden Hill in Manitoba, Buffalo Narrows and LaRonge, Saskatchewan and Pickle Lake, Ontario. Along the way he met and married wife Phyllis (nee Calberry). Into their lives came Carol (Tony Digiacinto, deceased), Craig (deceased 1981), Karen (Johnny), David (Sheila Grey, Touille), Andrew (Nina Merritt) and the little prince – Chase Alexander Sawyer. When the transfer back to NWT came, self-employment beckoned. “Albert’s Café” was purchased and renamed “The Nor’Win” and the next 22 years of public service began locally and inclusive of winter roads from the North. The opening and closing of Umex Mine and Dona Lake Mine were all part of the “boom or bust” cycle of the area. In 1978 he was elected trustee to the Connell and Ponsford District School Board continuing onto the amalgamation with Keewatin Patricia District School Board, serving education for nearly four decades. He treasured the friendships he made as he followed his passion – helping young people, through education, fulfill their potential. Along the way he served on the Economic Development Committee, the St. Raphael Signature Site Board and on various financial boards.
As per his request, cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers – pay it forward – help a child.
