Obituary for Francis Joseph Murphy
Frank Murphy, “Murphy” to his friends, was born May 19, 1955 to Marjorie Bruton and Daniel Murphy, along with his sister Debbie and brother Danny and their late sisters Sharon and Rusty. Murphy was living on his own by age 16 and in 1972 found his way to downtown Toronto, joining an active youth culture on Yonge Street.
Murphy was known to his friends as an avid reader, from Lord of the Rings to Kurt Vonnegut and other fantasy and sci fi fiction, as well as politics and current affairs. He also loved music, attended live concerts, and built a large collection of rock, R&B, Motown, country, blues and jazz recordings. Murphy worked at Sam the Record Man on Yonge Street in the ‘70s, and later in other retail stores.
He also created and moderated an online chat room for Firesign Theatre fans, visited by hundreds of people including members of the Firesign Theatre themselves. Murphy kept the site free of advertising, political comments, etc.
Murphy was known for his dry humour. When asked if he wanted his beer in a glass he would point out “it comes in a glass” (bottle). His Facebook page listed his high school as “Communist Martyrs”.
His best friends were musicians and Murphy could always be found at the Blue Goose Tavern parties over the years. His friends were his closest family. Murphy passed away in hospital June 19, 2018, after seeing the many friends who came to say goodbye. He will be remembered and missed.
There will be a celebration of his life at 35 Marilyn Crescent, East York, on Sunday July 15th from 3:00 p.m.
