Estelle Trenholm
1928-2018
The death occurred peacefully at South Shore Regional Hospital,
Bridgewater, NS on Saturday, July 14, 2018, of Estelle Trenholm (nee
Delisle) of Mahone Bay, NS, aged 90 years, beloved wife of the late
Bruce Trenholm.
Estelle was an active rural community volunteer and advocate for
agriculture, both in Quebec and in Nova Scotia. She was a
Women’s Institute member in East Angus, Quebec and in Caribou
and Mahone Bay, NS, active at the Provincial WI Level and served as
Agricultural Convenor for the Federated Women’s Institute of
Canada in the 1960’s and 70’s. Through that position she
also served on the Canadian 4-H Council and the Canadian Council on
Rural Development (CCRD). At the local level she provided leadership
to many community activities, from 4-H and local fairs through
political campaigns. She was also active in the Quebec Farmers’
Association in the 1960’s and 70’s. She and Bruce
participated in the activities of the Nova Scotia Holstein Branch. In
the year that Bruce died, they co-chaired the Planning Committee for
the 1986 Holstein Canada Convention, hosted by the Atlantic Branches.
Estelle was active in the United Church throughout her adult life,
teaching Sunday School, singing in choirs, leading UCW activities, and
in the last 25 years serving on South Shore Presbytery. She also
enjoyed her time working on the Women’s Auxiliary at
Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg. A Royal enthusiast
all her life, she was thrilled to have been recognized for her
community work through the receipt of a Queen’s Silver Jubilee
Medal in 1977.
Estelle is survived by daughter, Colleen (Harry) Younie, Morell, PEI
and son Kenneth Coates (Jacqueline Gosselin), Westbury, Quebec, as
well as ten grandchildren Shane Coates, Waterville, Quebec; Grace
(Jeff) McCourt, New Glasgow, PEI; Kenneth Younie (Ben Kim), Toronto,
Ontario; Katherine Coates (Pierre Boulet), Montmagny, Quebec; Donald
(Emily) Younie, Ebenezer, PEI; Martha Younie (Matthew Mann), Ottawa,
Ontario; Andy Coates, Westbury, Quebec; Leanna Coates (Aaron Mascaro),
Montreal, Quebec; Elizabeth Younie (Neil Fraser), Charlottetown, PEI;
and Ellen Younie (Evan Jackson), Halifax, NS and nine
great-grandchildren Finn and Molly McCourt; Charles, Madison and
Katrina Boulet; Bella, Ryland and Layla Younie; and Brianna Coates;
several nieces and nephews and sister-in-law “Theresa”
Lorraine Delisle in Chicago.
In addition to her husband, Estelle was predeceased by her parents,
Joseph and Lillian Delisle, Bulwer, Quebec, son Daniel (in infancy),
grandson Daniel (in infancy), her former husband, Wells Coates,
brothers and sisters: William (Dorothy) Delisle, Eileen (Winfield)
Ruiter-Hunter, George (Mavis) Delisle, Rita (Paul) DesRosiers, Pauline
(Roy) Howard and Frank Delisle. She was the last surviving member of
the Delisle family.
Colleen and Ken are very thankful for Estelle’s wonderful
neighbours over the years at Hyson Point, who enabled her to live in
her own home until the end. Thank you to all staff at SSRH for their
excellent care given and respect shown to Estelle during her 18-day
stay, especially Dr. McNally, Dr. Gowan, and Nurse Megan Hirtle.
A Celebration of Life Service at Trinity United Church, Mahone Bay
will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2018, followed by a
reception, to which all are invited. Interment will take place at a
later date in St-Antoine Cemetery, Lennoxville, Quebec, where she will
rest close to her parents, several brothers and sisters, their spouses
and their children. Flowers gratefully declined.
If desired, donations in Estelle’s memory may be made to Trinity
United Church, Mahone Bay or the Canadian Cancer Society.
