Decheno, Ernest Joseph
October 2, 1958- January 29, 2018
With sadness, our family announces the passing of Ernest Joseph Decheno of North Bay on January 29, 2018 at the North Bay Regional Health Centre at the age of 59 years, after a fierce battle with pancreatic cancer. The beloved son of Mary Decheno (nee Whiteduck) of Mattawa, predeceased by his father Ernie Decheno Sr. Survived by his partner Cindy Spence of North Bay. Ernie was a loving father to his son’s Dallas Bondy (Jessica Tabachak) and Shane Bondy, grandson Andrew and their family from Wikwemikong who were all great sources of pride to him. His smile will be missed by all including his sister Judi Thorkelson (Paul Wilson) of Powassan, brothers Rick (Joanne) Decheno of Nipissing First Nation, Fred (Joyce) Decheno of Manitowadge and his sister Kim Decheno (Robert Stoneypoint) of Sagamok First Nation. His thoughtful gentle ways will always be remembered by a very large circle of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
A long-time employee of Carry-All Builders in North Bay, he was often seen on local roads delivering materials, and cheerfully waving from his truck. In his personal time, one of his greatest joys was watching Andrew play hockey and he was there cheering Andrew on, whenever possible. Ernie was a well-known Men’s Traditional Dancer, and in his younger days, a competitive dancer. He loved painting, music of all kinds, and traditional crafting, he generously shared his knowledge and skill of creating regalia to those who asked. His goal this past summer was to cover as many Pow Wows as possible, he was so fortunate to do this one last time, visiting so many old friend and family throughout the province.
Ernie was a quiet and soft-spoken man. This week there is a Super Moon, an event that happens once in 150 years. It’s an event that is amazing, yet happens quietly. Ernie was that kind of wonderful.
Our family would like to say- Miigwetch and Thank-you to all who gave their care, kindness and support throughout this time.
Family will be receiving visitors at the McGuinty Funeral Home (North Bay) on Thursday February 1, 2018 from 2-4 & 6-9 pm. Burial will take place in Spring 2018. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Pow Wow Fund or the Canadian Cancer Society would be gratefully appreciated by his family. Online condolences can be made at www.mcguintyfuneralhome.com
