Obituary of Ellard Perry
Ellard Royce Perry died peacefully at Pontiac Community Hospital Palliative Care Unit on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, six days after his seventy-fourth birthday.
The middle son of George and Elsie Perry, Ellard was born on October 11, 1944 in Shawville, QC and was raised in Waltham. Shortly after obtaining his teaching certificate, he taught in Prescott and Renfrew, ON. His career, however, was based in Shawville, at Shawville and then Pontiac High from 1967-1975, where his favorite courses were science and history. From 1975-1981, Ellard was PPHS’s Vice Principal and then Principal from 1981-1991, where he influenced generations of students with kindness, good humour, and jelly beans.
After a short stint at the Western Quebec School Board in Aylmer, Ellard retired in 1997 and took up a slower pace of life back in Shawville. Many will remember Ellard as a painter and fire wood empresario who “never made a lot of money, but sure made a lot of friends.”
A committed Christian, Ellard was an active and devoted member of Shawville Standard Church and then New Hope Community Church, serving in worship and on the local board. He also loved attending and supporting Zion Hill Camp in Forrester’s Falls.
But the greatest loves of his life (after Jesus) were his wife Kathryn and his three sons, Tim (Rachel), Paul, and Aaron (Heather) and he revelled in the times he spent with his grandchildren, Calvin, Sara, and Hugh (Tim and Rachel) and Emma Beth, Wesley, and Donovan (Aaron and Heather).
He is survived by his brothers Wayne (Eileen (d. 2015) and Cathy), Walter (Margo), and his sister, Cheryl (Earl). Also surviving are his brother in law, Wilmont Horner, his sisters in law Marjorie and Norma Horner, and their families.
Friends may call at Hayes Funeral Home, 134 Centre Street, Shawville, Quebec on Monday, October 22, from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. and prior to the funeral on Tuesday, October 23, at Whitewater Wesleyan Community Church, 42 Cedar Haven Road, Cobden, ON at 9:30 a.m. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m., with Rev. Aaron Perry and Rev. Tim Perry presiding. A reception will follow. Interment at Radford United Church Cemetery will follow the reception.
Donations in Ellard’s memory to New Hope Christian Fellowship Building Fund and Pontiac Community Hospital Foundation – Oncology are gratefully accepted.
Ellard’s family is especially grateful for the excellent care he received during several stays at Pontiac Community Hospital, during his regular chemo treatments, and in his final days in palliative care.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Ellard
