Obituary Overview
Forever Cherished
Elisabeth Mary Wagner
March 9, 1965 – Sept 16, 2018
Elisabeth passed away peacefully in Calgary on Sunday morning, her hands gently held by those who loved her.
Elisabeth was born in Lloydminster, SK to Lilian and George Wagner, and grew up in North Battleford, SK. She and her family enjoyed many summer days at Jackfish Lake at the family cabin, with a large circle of friends. Early pursuits included swimming, dancing and lifeguarding. Her father, a respected surgeon, and mother, an accomplished nurse, both served as important role models. In Grade 12 she began dating Rob Corson, who became her steadfast love and eventually her husband.
Lis completed her undergraduate Microbiology degree at McGill in Montreal in 1987. She studied Anthropology and then Medicine in Saskatoon at the University of Saskatchewan, graduating in 1994. She moved to Calgary with Rob where she completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of Calgary in 1999. She delivered countless babies during her almost twenty year career at the Peter Lougheed Centre, treating each patient with compassion and respect. A skilled surgeon, she was also a trusted teacher and mentor to many residents and junior colleagues. She advocated for optimal patient care as a medical leader at the PLC, and was a valued colleague and friend to many the O&G community.
Always an accomplished athlete, Lis excelled in every physical pursuit, from swimming to running and biking to downhill and back-country skiing. She and Rob developed strong friendships at Optimum Performance Training and in the CrossFit Calgary community. She loved hiking in the mountains, travel, entertaining at home and at the lake, as well as good food and wine. A sparkling and genuine conversationalist, Elisabeth brought style and zest to every social event. A treasured and loyal friend, she never hesitated to share a recipe, a book recommendation, a piece of sensible and caring advice and a laugh.
Her daughters Emma (18) and Sarah (17) were Lis’s greatest joy. She encouraged them in all their endeavours, and took deep pride in the talented, lovely young women they have become. Her husband Rob was her tender companion, partner in adventure, and loving best friend.
In recent years, Lis lived gracefully and courageously with triple negative breast cancer, which recurred in December 2016. Her journey was made easier through the care and compassion of her surgical and oncology teams, in particular, her oncologist Marc Webster and Clinical Research Nurse, Barb Gore-Hickman, and family and friends who supported her. Immense gratitude is extended to the medical and palliative providers in Saskatoon and Calgary, and the staff at Rosedale Hospice who provided comfort to Elisabeth in her last weeks.
Elisabeth is predeceased by her father George Wagner. Left to celebrate her memory are her husband of 23 years, Robert Corson, daughters Emma and Sarah Corson, stepdaughter Kristy Mattock (husband Jeff, son Barrett, daughter Reese), mother Lilian Wagner, sister Maya Wagner (husband Allan Woo, son Ethan Meyer, daughter Tien), brother Robert Wagner (wife Contelenea, sons Damond, Noah, Samuel and daughter Amara), sisters in law Lee Ann Corson and Connie Corson (daughter Chelsea and son Kyle), cousins and many friends. She will be missed immeasurably.
A service of memory and celebration will be held in Calgary on October 21, 2018 at 3:00 pm. Arrangements through Eden Brook Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, Elisabeth has requested that donations be made to Calgary Hospice Society or the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Please specify that donations be directed to breast cancer research.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Elisabeth Mary Wagner 2018..
