Obituary Overview
In Loving Memory
Doris Ferne Scarratt, age 94, passed away with a tear in her eye, surrounded by family and Love, on December 1, 2018 at the South Health Campus Hospital in Calgary. She entered this world feisty and departed this world, fighting till the end. She was born in Meota, Saskatchewan to parents Lil and Jack Cooney. She married her loving husband, Bill, in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, August 1948, who preceded her in death in 1998.
She outlived her four brothers, Cecil (Marion), Robert Louis (Freda), Frank (Brenda), Jim (Gene) and sister Gladys (Gordon) and is survived by her sister-in-law Freda. Doris is the loving and devoted mother of Kent (Vicki), Dean (Connie), Janet (Patrick) and Rob (Stephanie) and the doting Grandma/“Nanny” to 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren – Bryan (Jessica) and Brady; Kristen (Luke), Tayler, Seth, Jackson and Ainsley Kate; Dan (Cindy), Hunter and Tyler; Kip (deceased 2017); Ali (Brad), Hannah, Kirsten and Rylie; Addison and Emmelin.
She was first and foremost a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Doris treasured her children and loved her role as Nanny. She touched the heart of everyone who knew her. Doris took Hairdressing after high school and always travelled with her scissors, cutting and fixing family and friend’s hair, everywhere and anywhere.
Curling, baseball, bridge, gardening, keeping her home meticulously clean, volunteering at her children’s school and babysitting her grandchildren kept Doris active and fit. She was very creative and crafty with painting, drawing, knitting, crocheting and completing her children’s homework assignments in a pinch. Doris loved dancing, listening to music, baking and entertaining. Forever friends, good times and fond memories were made at the Bar Kay Cee in Bragg Creek, participating in pot-luck dinners, sports days, trail rides and just good old plain mischief.
Calgary was home for most of Doris’ adult life with a short “retirement” on Vancouver Island. At the age of 82 she said “if I don’t move there now, I never will”, and off she went for 9 years before returning home to Calgary. Doris loved to travel and Hawaii was her favorite and frequent holiday destination. At the age of 86, Doris made a quick 10 day trip to Italy to visit family; just the thought of that at her age would make anyone tired, but not Doris! She was always a fashion statement and loved to shop. Doris took great care with her appearance and clothes, even insisting on putting her “face on” and doing her hair before a recent trip to Emergency. She always smelled so good and fresh.
As Doris’ health failed this last year, she continued to be as independent as possible, not wanting to bother anybody for extra help. She never ever complained about anything and always had a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eyes. The last word she spoke was “fine” when asked how she was doing in the Hospital. We will never forget Doris’ fondness for chocolate, ice cream and geraniums, her tenacity, memory, wit, grace, patience, elegance and undying love and care for her family and friends.
She will be dearly missed. Her Love will live on. Doris’ family would like to thank the staff at Auburn Heights Retirement Resident and our friends and extended family for their support and love during her last year.
A Celebration of Doris’s Life will be held at Mountain View Funeral Home, (Prairie View Chapel, 1605 – 100 Street SE, Calgary) on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. with reception to follow. To express condolences, please visit: www.mountainviewmemorial.ca.
