Dr. Don (Donald Lawrence Lush) passed away peacefully with family at his side, at Peterborough Regional Health Centre on Saturday June 30th, 2018 aged 73. Don left behind his most beloved wife, fellow Trent Grad and life companion, Martha, of 51 years and children Shelly (Shane), Christopher (Marny), Will (Christine) and Landon. Don will be greatly missed by his loving grandchildren Stephen, Katie, Rachael, Charlie, Abby, Isabelle and Jack. Don will also be fondly remembered by his sisters Joey (Bob), Gwendolyn (Paul), Mary (David, deceased) and his brother David (Brenda), brother-in-law Buck, (Anne), sister-in-law Christine (Gord), Uncle Tom Wheler, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, business associates and fellow cottagers.
Don passed away on the vigil of the Feast of St Junipero Serra…founder of the California and Mexican Missions…San Diego, Santa Cruze, San Francisco… the motto of St Junipero was “ Always Forward…never Back”…which describes the life and beautiful mind of Don perfectly.
Don was a member of the first Trent University graduating class and received his Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo in biology. He was a mover and a shaker in the environmental consulting and technology industry for almost 50 years. Don served as an amazing mentor for so many lives and careers and believed in always finding new things to do so that others could pick up what he was doing at the time and advance their own life work. Don believed in the pursuit of excellence over profit and the understanding that profit follows excellence and not the other way round. Don was a quiet, thoughtful and hugely intelligent giant in his field. His life was one of passion and boundless energy . He inspired innovation and creativity. IMPACT, EMMA and MineMod were Don’s vision or creations inspired by that vision.
He was a founder of Microbial Insights, Beak International and Enviromental Technologies and shaped both Environmental Bio-detection Products Inc as well as the future path of Amaircare and other companies. Don loved his work, serving in advisory roles with both NSERC , the IAEA and CNSC during his very successful professional career.
Don was known to include his wife and family in business trips around the world…taking the time to smell the roses as he worked and travelled. His amazing work ethic put the rest of us to shame. He was able to juggle many different areas of research successfully and thoughtfully at the same time. Whether it was Vienna for meetings with the Vienna Centre, Freiberg to work with Beak International, Finland and Germany on Trade Missions, Stockholm with the IAEA or road trips to Halifax, Knoxville or Cincinnati , Don always gave his utmost to each. The German Government provided two of Don and Martha’s favourite occasions for dinner…at the Princess’s Palace in Berlin near Unter den Linden and in the Crystal Halle in Koln (Cologne) at a Trade show where he was a keynote speaker. He thrived on new ideas and research. Don lived a life of integrity, commitment and drive for excellence.
He was known to humorously answer phone calls for Martha’s volunteer work , saying …” Rosary Apostolate, World Headquarters, how can I help you?”… causing amusement and laughter from the callers. Don interjected fun into the all too serious business of working to live and living to work. All who sought his advice came away richer in knowledge, stronger in conviction , and more passionately challenged to take their questions to ever deeper levels…levels they had previously never envisioned.
Don’s love for the outdoors helped spur his passion for his work. He lived an energetic balance between the two which became the envy of many. He had the ability to manage a conference call juxtaposed with periods of boiling down sap for his traditional Spring maple syrup ritual.
Our nieces Alexandra and Sarah have this to say about their Unkilly: He had an innate wisdom, always transcending life’s ho-hum to see the greater picture. This spurred his witty sense of humour, always bringing those around him up with his unique ability to take a bird’s eye view and add a twist of humour to any situation. It’s as if he was always looking at life from a special lens of perspective which he shared with others, teaching ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff. And it’s all small stuff’.
He is Well known for his easy and generous laugh, and a twinkle in his eye. He defended the water and earth’s plants and creatures endlessly, teaching his family and friends about the connectivity of all things.
He was a visionary and believed in others’ visions as much as his own – offering creative ideas inspired by his research to help his nieces push their art and writing to new frontiers. His influence ripples endlessly.
We will miss you Dad.
Good night , sweet Prince…
May bands of Angels sing Thee to Thy rest.
