Mehta, “Dave” Devinder Nath – Pugwash
Dave was a complete man, family man adored by all. He believed in giving. He followed the elders’ advice – If you live for yourself, that is not living. If you live for others, that is the life well lived.
It is with sadness that the family of Devinder Mehta announces his death in North Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Pugwash, on Friday, March 30, 2017. He died peacefully at the age of 85. Born in Bhera, India, on October 11, 1932, he was the beloved husband of Bala (Datta) of Nairobi, Kenya and father of Anil. He was predeceased by his parents, sisters and brother. Dave was educated in Kenya, England and the United States. He taught in Teachers College in Kenya and in 1964 he and Bala came to Canada and began a distinguished career as a much loved and admired educator in Pugwash District High School and North Colchester High School in Tatamagouche. He was a popular teacher and coach, coaching the women’s field hockey team that represented Nova Scotia in the first Canada Summer Games in Halifax in 1969. He also led the Pugwash District High School boys’ basketball team to a Provincial Championship in 1966. Devinder was an avid golfer, curler, and an all-around athlete. He was an accomplished wood worker, gardener and wine maker. His home had one of the best views of Pugwash Harbour. He was a natural leader and was president of the Oxford Curling Club and King Lion of the Pugwash Lion’s Club. Dave was a gentleman and a scholar as evidenced by his wide and varied circle of friends; from playing croquet with the Archbishop of Canterbury, to entertaining Ambassadors, to the generations of students he adored, and to the friends he took under his nurturing wing. He made everyone feel special. He was an adventurer at heart as well as in life, from motorcycling around Europe to climbing mountains in Kenya and Europe. He was a great story teller and amazed those around him with his ability to have a joke or amusing story to fit any occasion. To show his giving spirit he donated his body for research. A memorial service for Dave will be held on Saturday, May 26 in Pugwash ( time and place to be published at a later date. Special thanks for the personal care provided by Dr. Oluwarotimi Fashoranti and Dr. Peter Blaikie and the exceptional assistance provided by the medical and support staff in North Cumberland Memorial Hospital and Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, North Cumberland Memorial Hospital or to the charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mundle’s Funeral Home, 204 Water St., Pugwash (902) 243-2506. Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting the funeral home website at www.mmcfunerals.com
