Obituary Overview
David William Griffiths
GRIFFITHS, David “Dave” William
With profound sadness, we the family of Dave Griffiths, announce his death on April 18, 2018 at home. Born in Halifax on September 14, 1941, Dave was the son of the late John “Jack” and Hazel (MacLeod) Griffiths. He grew up in the far north end of Halifax and attended Richmond School, grades 1 to 9 and then Queen Elizabeth High School. During his junior and senior high years, he played on both school basketball teams, and also later in the military on base teams. Dave joined the Royal Canadian Armed Forces in 1961. He served in the Dental Corps and achieved the rank of Sergeant. He advanced in his career to assume the position of Dental Clinic Co-Ordinator at his last several postings. In the mid to late 1970’s, Dave was a member of the Canadian Forces Peacekeeping Mission in Cyprus. Accordingly, he and other members of that group were honoured with being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1988. Dave had a fine singing voice and performed as the lead soloist in military choirs on bases where he served. He was also an avid sports fan, keenly interested in following the NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball games. He favoured the Toronto Raptors, the Maple Leafs and Blue Jays. After his retirement from the military in 1992, Dave was employed for a number of years by Halifax Development Ltd.-Crombie Reit. He worked in the security division at the sites of the World Trade and Convention Centre; Toronto Dominion Data Centre; Nova Scotia Power Corporation and the CIBC Call Centre. He retired in 2006, and the same year acquired his faithful dog Jake, a Nova Scotia Duck Toller who predeceased him by just a number of months. Dave is survived by his daughter, Leanne (Matt), son, Bradley (Loretta); grandson, Sean, all residing in Manitoba; sister Margaret Moss (Harold), Prince Edward Island; nephew, David Halozan and niece, Sonia Blenkhorn (Ian), Nova Scotia and several great nieces and nephews. Dave was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Mike Halozan; nephew, Stephen Halozan, and step-sister, Sister Greta Conrad. In spite of the challenges presented by his health issues during the past several years, Dave maintained a very positive attitude and continued to enjoy life through regular contact with his family members and a number of close friends. He appreciated the in-home services which he accessed-Victorian Order of Nurses; Elderdog Walking Program and Closing the Gap (Home Support). We, the family especially wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. R. Panek and the Dialysis team at the Queen Elizabeth II (Dickson Centre) where he received skilled and dedicated care. A memorial service will take place 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 9 in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville. A reception will follow in the funeral home. There will be no visitation. Cremation is arranged. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dave’s memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association. Online condolences may be sent to www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com Sackville Chapel.
