The family of David (Everett) MacLeod is saddened to announce his peaceful passing on November 15, 2018 at the Camp Hill Veteran’s Memorial Building. Everett was born on July 16, 1925 in Brule, Colchester County, Nova Scotia to the late David and Edna (Heighton) MacLeod, and spent his younger years living in Pictou County. He joined the Royal Canadian Airforce as a teenager and went overseas during the last year of WWII. Upon his return, he attended Acadia University and graduated with a Science Degree in 1949. It was at Acadia that he met his future wife, Phyllis (Burbidge) of Lower Canard, Kings County. After graduating from Acadia, he attended Dalhousie University, graduating with a Degree in Medicine, eventually specializing in Ophthalmology. Everett rejoined the Air Force until he retired in 1965, having postings in Halifax, North Bay (where he was awarded the Queen’s Commendation Medal for Bravery), Chatham, Downsview and Ottawa. After retiring, he began a private practice in Ophthalmology in Belleville, ON which he continued until 1982.
In retirement years, Phyllis and Everett lived in Prince Edward County (Cressy), ON, spending some winters in Florida and traveling extensively. Wishing to return to their home province, they eventually moved back to Nova Scotia in 1998 settling in Porter’s Lake. Everett was an avid boater, enjoyed boat building, woodworking and spending time outdoors in his yard.
Dad was a proud father and grandfather with an unwavering resolve. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. Everett is survived by his four sons and their families: John (Cheryl Goldsmith) of West Chezzetcook, NS , Paul (Florence Zandberg) of Grimsby, ON, Keith (Audrey Schoth) of North Vancouver, BC, and Brian (Linda Munroe) of Hammonds Plains, NS; by eleven grandchildren: Cameron, Daniel, Michael (Andrea), Kristin, Julie, Amy, Laura (Robyn), David, Julia (Sam), Madeline and Leland, a great-grandchild, Naomi MacLeod. He is also survived by his brother, Merle MacLeod of Moncton, NB, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by both of his parents, his beloved wife Phyllis, in 2012, and his sisters, Irene, Violet and Elva.
The family would like to thank the staff of V3-West at the Camp Hill Veteran’s Memorial Building for their exceptional care of their dad over the past six months. A private family burial service will take place at a later date. Words of condolences can be sent to www.dartmouthfuneralhome.ca.
