It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, Dena Hill, age 90, on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at home, surrounded by her family.
Born in Frenchvale on April 25, 1927, Dena was the daughter of the late Neil and Delia (Roach) MacMullen.
Dena was a faithful member of St. Joseph Church in Bras d’Or, a former Sunday School teacher and in younger years, a member of the CWL. She was very proud of the fact that in 1978, at the age of 51, she went back to school and began upgrading her education and in 1980, obtained her GED. From there she became a well known and valued employee at Zellers in North Sydney, starting at the age of 52 and retiring after 14 years of service at age 67.
Dena was an avid sports fan, especially baseball and enjoyed following her grandchildren to cheer them on at their various sporting activities. She was a long-time participant and supporter of the Terry Fox Run and a former member of the Georges River Home and School.
Dena is survived by her 11 children, Linda (David) Lovett, Leitches Creek, Pearl (Willard) Brown, Margaree, Neil (Diane) Hill, Leitches Creek, Luke (Lisa) Hill, Hal (Irene) Hill, Kenny (Janice) Hill, Darlene (Jack) Burton, Debbie (Donnie) Eavis, Wanda (John) Capstick, all of Georges River, Bonnie (Terry) Eavis, Michelle (Mark) Williams, both of Scotch Lake; by her grandchildren, Aaron(Lyndel) Lovett, Paul (Cathy) Lovett, Chrissi (Steve) Kelso, Sherry (Troy) Jessome, Terry (Cindy) Power, Dwayne (Christine) Power, Kerry (Joey) Gouthro, Lisa (Brad) Wassilaskus, Jason (Hilary) Hill, Dawn (Kevin) Laffin, John (Brittany) Brown, Christopher (Emily) Brown, Shirley Hill, Luke Hill, Steven (Susan) Hill, Adam (Shannon) Hill, Danielle Burton (Josh), Cyril Eavis, Corey Eavis, Stephanie (Dave) Lannon, Ryan Eavis, MacKayla Williams, Lexie Williams; great grandchildren, Sophie, Emma, Kenzie, Colby, Nathan, Jackson, Spencer, Kaitlyn, Jacob, Alison, Kristopher, Abby, Rebecca, Darien, Tyler, Nicholas, Noah, Isabella, Brody, Danica, Riley, Cohen, Liam, Rilynn, Luke, William, Dominic, Mia, Roan, Lucy, Mabel, Charlie, Rye, Levi, Archer and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Cyril Luke Hill, her infant grandson, Kyle Alexander Burton; sisters, Joan MacDonald, Marie MacDonald, Ellen Day and two sisters in infancy, her
brother Michael MacMullen and infant brother Roderick, brothers-in-law Charlie MacDonald, Angus MacDonald, Tom Day and Kenny Hill and her sister-in-law, Winnie MacMullen.
The family would like to send special thanks to special friends and caregivers, Karen Eavis and Bonnie Eavis, Dr. John Kirkpatrick and his staff, Palliative Care, VON, Cape Breton County Homemakers and staff of the Northside General Hospital for the care given to Dena.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday from St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, with Rev. Peter McLeod officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date.
