OBITUARY
Charles Henry Dee
March 3, 1927 – November 6, 2018
Charles grew up in Toronto, enjoying riding his bike through the city’s parks as well as the trails around the family cottage at Wasaga Beach. He had a lifelong love of adventure, starting with sneaking into the tunnels of nearby Casa Loma after dark and culminating in many exciting travels both in Canada and Europe.
Charles’ love affair with the Rocky Mountains began as a young man with a job on a Banff golf course (a sport he knew nothing about!) where he did little but gaze at the majesty of the mountains all around him.
Back in Toronto, Charles obtained a BA and MA from Victoria College, University of Toronto. Proficiency in both German and French helped Charles to begin a rewarding career in the Toronto school system, teaching at both Harbord and Parkdale CI, from where he retired.
Few people were more knowledgeable or passionate about all forms of classical music than Charles and it was at a concert that he met Mary, the wonderful woman who would be his wife for over 63 years. Charles always said his three big loves were all “M”‘s – Mary, Music and Mountains. Mary and Charles took their two children, Jonathan and Mary, hiking in the Rockies and traveled regularly to NYC to experience iconic concerts and artists, many of whom Charles personally corresponded with. Eventually Mary and Charles were able to visit Europe, experiencing the wonders of Paris and Vienna as well as the German, French and Austrian countryside (“chateau hopping”, as Charles liked to call it). Charles’ life was a life well lived!

Friends are invited to a celebration of Charles’ life at Metropolitan United Church 56 Queen St East Toronto with a service at 11 o’clock followed by a reception on Thursday November 15, 2018. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
