Thompson, Catherine (Collins)
Sydney
It is with broken hearts, we announce the passing of our
beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Catherine Bernadette Thompson,
on Saturday, December 22, 2018 after a brief battle with cancer at the
An Cala Palliative Care Unit surrounded by her loving
family.
Born March 21, 1934 and raised in Beaver Cove, Cape
Breton. She was the oldest daughter of the late Bernard and
Margaret (MacMullin) Collins.
Catherine is survived by her husband of 61 years, Gordon;
daughters Jeanette, Cathy (Walter Rutherford) and Margie, all of
Sydney, and sons Gordie (Tina Howe), Dartmouth and Darren (Patricia
Fraser), Ottawa; grandchildren Mark and Trevor Rutherford, Sydney;
Matthew, Dartmouth; and Hannah, Michael and Emma, Ottawa.
Also surviving are siblings Florence (Cyril) Worth, Gertie Taylor,
Anna Bennett, Donnie (Catherine), Bernice, Mike (Lucina), Vera (Vern)
Roach, Julie, Margie Ward, Pat (Kevin Squires), Eileen MacDonald and

She is predeceased by her sons, Michael (1986) and Gerald in infancy;
her grandson, Christopher Rutherford in infancy. Also

MacArthur.
Catherine was a homemaker and devoted to her
family. She was known far and wide for her ability to cook
and bake, when you left mom not only was your body full but also your
heart and soul. Family meant everything to Mom and we always
knew we had her unconditional love and support.
Mom was a devoted member of St. Theresa’s Parish,
and a member of Branch 138 Ladies’ Auxiliary.
Until the loss of her vision, mom was an avid walker with her sister,
Florence, and a voracious reader even reading cook books for
entertainment.
Visitation will be held Thursday December 27, 2018 from 6
– 9 pm in Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral Mass will take
place Friday at 2 pm in St. Theresa’s Church with Rev.
Dennis Lamey officiating. Interment will take place at Resurrection
Cemetery at a later date.
Donations in Catherine’s memory can be made to
Muscular Dystrophy Association, St. Theresa’s Parish, An
Cala Palliative Care Unit at CBRH or charity of
