Bernice MacDonald
1931-2018
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of
our beloved wife and mother Bernice Marie (MacKenzie) MacDonald on
February 17, 2018 in Bedford, NS.
Born in Sydney, NS on May 20, 1931 to the late William and Jane
MacKenzie, Bernice is survived by her loving husband of 61 years,
Anselm (Anse) MacDonald; devoted children, Karen (Keith) Williams,
Cole Harbour, NS, Brent (Cindy) MacDonald, Bedford, NS, Bruce (Terri)
MacDonald, Upper Tantallon, NS, and Janet (Larry) Nicholson, Coxheath,
NS; grandchildren, Joey (Rebecca) and Jeff (Jennifer) Williams, Liam
and Neil MacDonald, and Amanda, Julia, and Jennifer Nicholson;
great-grandchildren, Brayden, Emmett, Georgia, and Tucker; Claire
(Henry) White, Glace Bay, NS whom she regarded as a sister;
brother-in-law, Vince (Anne) MacDonald, Halifax, NS; and many nieces
and nephews.
Bernice was predeceased by her infant sons, Kent and David, brothers,
Francis and Kevin, and sister, Aline.
During her school years in Reserve Mines, NS and later in Sydney where
she graduated from Holy Angels Convent (High School) in 1948, Bernice
became an accomplished violinist, developing a love for music that she
passed on to her children. Following high school, Bernice was employed
at the Point Edward Naval Base as an IBM computer operator, and always
cherished her times skating at the Sydney Forum and dancing at the
Venetian Gardens.
Following their marriage in 1956, Bernice and Anse moved to New
Glasgow where they resided until November 2017 when they moved to
Bedford, NS.
Bernice was a dedicated wife and mother who loved her family dearly,
and found great joy in practicing her faith at Our Lady of Lourdes
Parish. Bernice loved animals, caring for pets and rescuing stray and
lost animals her entire life.
Funeral arrangements under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home,
55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow, NS, with visitation Wednesday, February
21, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm, at the Funeral Home. Funeral mass at Our Lady
of Lourdes Catholic Church, 112 North Foord St, Stellarton, NS on
Thursday, February 22, at 11 am, Fr. Barrett Clare-Johnson and Fr.
Peter MacDonald con-celebrating. Family flowers only, donations in her
memory may be made to the Pictou County SPCA.
Bernice’s family would like to thank all her healthcare and personal
care workers for the dedication and compassion they showed over the
last several months.
