Arvid Eric Landstrom
Arv passed away on November 8 2018, in his 90th year, peacefully at home in Trenton, with his wife, son and daughter by his side.
Husband of 53 years and companion of 60 to Lillian Mary (Sparrow), dear father to Cheryl (Jon Young) of Toronto and Naval Lt. Commander Erik (Beth) of Ottawa, and beloved and devoted Poppa to Alli Young, and Far Far to William Landstrom.
Survived by his brother Ed (Clare) of Merlin and predeceased by his parents Karl and Alli (Ojala), his brother Gust (Edna) of Toronto, sister Ella (Rainer) of Timmins, and the the best dog ever, Toby. Remembered dearly by many brothers-and-sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.
Whether you knew him as Arvid, Arv, The Big Swede – or for those who couldn’t quite navigate that Scandinavian name, perhaps even Harvey or David – if you knew him you loved him. Born in Kapuskasing he was a true northern boy. Farmer, class A mechanic, cowboy, automotive service advisor and proud member of the Toronto Police for over 33 years, Arv was a man of many hats. He was happiest in the woods, on the water, or in the garage. He shared his love of fishing, cars and puttering with his brothers, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and young neighbors. With hands the size of baseball mitts and what seemed like the strength of 10 men he took pride in never needing to ask for help whether he was moving a large appliance, prying boulders from the earth or lifting timbers or engines into place. He often said he loved hard work – he could watch it all day! A quiet man with a twinkle in his pale blue eyes, he didn’t have much to say, but people listened when he spoke. He was an imposing physical presence with a gentle spirit. Salt of the earth and also a bit salty, he loved to play a good prank and was the king of the dad joke since the times they were just known as bad jokes. Rarely a day passed that he didn’t pull out an oldie but a goody, right to the very end.
He will be missed by all who knew him.
Special thanks must be shared with the many medical professionals and kind neighbors who helped him along the way, In particular Dr. Y. Youseff who was responsible for getting him the right care at the right time so many times, the KGH Cancer Clinic, Dr. V. Koshy and Dr.M. Dodds, and Michelle his palliative care nurse.
At Arv’’s request there will be no funeral. Should you wish to honour his memory, the family suggests a donation to the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation in recognition of the kind, compassionate and attentive care he received at this small community hospital as he neared the end of his life. tmhfoundation.com/
