Obituary of Alan Raphael
ALAN MERVYN RAPHAEL (RAFFLES)
Passed away peacefully at home on Monday, October 22, 2018. Alan was born December 26, 1931 in Calcutta, India.
Alan is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Anne (Annieeeee !) Marie Raphael nee McEachreon; numerous nephews and nieces, and will be fondly remembered by the McEachreon family of Moncton, New Brunswick. The youngest of nine, he was predeceased by his parents, Nissam and Sally; siblings David, Josh, Ralph, Victor, Rosemary, Sarah, Susan and Penny; nephews Neil and Alan; and niece Sally.
To quote Alan “I scored many key goals, made many clutch putts, made many scores in the market, had a great career, but the biggest thrill of them all was marrying Annie, and sharing such a wonderful life with her.”
Raffles will be sorely missed by his friends from Canada, Australia and around the world. We all know with his passing that “today is not another day like yesterday” and “Come in Karachi” will live long in our memories.
Alan was an avid sportsman, excelling in field hockey, cricket, squash, tennis and golf. To his chagrin he never had a hole-in-1! Although he did realize his lifetime dream of playing a round at Pebble Beach.
He participated in the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, representing Canada in Field Hockey. He was invited to the 1976 Olympics in Montreal by the CBC to provide color commentary for Field Hockey. In 2017 he numbered among the first inductees to the newly formed Canadian Field Hockey Hall of Fame.
Alan enjoyed many years on Bay Street as an Investment Advisor, retiring in June, 2010 from Dundee Securities. As a Stock Broker Alan was legendary. His clients spanned the globe and were drawn from the highest ranks of executives and entrepreneurs. There was nobody better at brokering a deal between Sydney and London, from his desk in Toronto. Alan’s clients were his best friends. He was always on the job, and loved every minute of it.
At Alans request there will be no funeral. Friends and family are invited to raise a glass in farewell on Thursday, November 1st, 2018 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Hemingway’s, 142 Cumberland Street, Toronto.
Annie is most appreciative to the care provided by the Temmy Latner Centre and his caregivers Lori, Beth, Lynn & Tess.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care, Mount Sinai. www.tlcpc.org/ 416-586- 8203. Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
