WOOD, Alan James
Alan died suddenly on October 9th, 2018 of heart failure, while recovering from surgery. He was in his 74th year. Alan was with Fay, his wife and best friend of 30 years. Much loved by his nephew, James O’Sullivan and special friends (aka “adopted daughters”) Shari Wahl, Ali Ryan & Sarah Walters. Predeceased by his sister, Mary Wood. Survived by his brothers-in law John O’Sullivan & Robin Clouthier (Kym McCreary) & their children Quinn & Teela. He is also survived by his first wife, Rosanna Scotti. Remembered by his long-time friends, and occasional business partners, Philip Sweeney, Halsey Bradford & Paul Vincent Smith.
Alan had 2 distinct lives. After graduation from the University of Toronto with a degree in English Literature, and a foray into banking, he settled at Manulife for 18 years, climbing the ladder through several analytic & marketing roles. He was highly visible and quite successful, sometimes despite his “style”, sometimes because of it. A very social person, Alan made many lifelong friends at Manulife.
In 1988, thinking that he would not live long enough to enjoy retirement at a normal age, given the family genes, he left Manulife & began travelling the world with Fay LeBlanc. They travelled for 20 years, largely in Europe and Asia, from a base in Whistler, BC, which he loved. In those early Whistler days, Alan was known for helping many young people with encouragement, clothes for an interview, a computer to upgrade skills, even a set of teeth! In the past 10 years, Alan lived a quieter life, had some health issues, & cut back on socializing, in some part due to his deafness. He still read voraciously & always wanted to know from Fay what was going on with everyone. Alan was always his own man, and never self-conscious or apologetic about his different circumstances.
Alan was cremated, as he wished, & wanted no service. Drinks will be poured in his honour at various venues special to Alan. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favourite charity, or young person in need.
