W Douglas Neilson – 1942-2017

W. Douglas Neilson
1942-2017
The passing of William Douglas ‘Doug’
Neilson occurred on October 26, 2017, in Oromocto, NB. Born on January
9, 1942 in Sheffield, he was the son of the late Ralph and Sadie
(Bridges) Neilson. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth
(Foran) Neilson.
In Doug’s early
twenties, he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and was stationed in
Chilliwack, BC. In 1961 he was posted to Iserlohn,
Germany. Upon returning to Canada, he became a member of the
Oshawa Police Force and then served with the Village of Nashwaaksis
Police Force. Following his police service he began a career
with the Provincial Government. At that time he was in
charge of Metric Conversion. During the 1973 Flood, he along
with members of the Emergency Measures Organization (EMO), coordinated
efforts to assist farmers in the Sheffield and Maugerville area to
relocate livestock to Burton. Upon his retirement from the
Provincial Government, Doug enjoyed farming, trucking and music.
Doug is survived by his children, Janet Ann
Neilson, Lynn McKeen (George), Shane Neilson (Janet), Corey Neilson
(Joanne); grandchildren, Jennifer and Andrew McKeen, Zdenka, Kazuo and
Aria Neilson, Cade and Logan Neilson; great grandson, Jack McKeen;
sisters, Barbara Ann Jamieson (Carl) and Janet Harvey (Cecil);
brother, David Neilson (Jan); nephews and niece, Chris (Susan) and
Jennifer Jamieson, Michael (April) and Steven Harvey, and Andrew
(Angela) Neilson; six great nieces and one great nephew; as well as
one great-great niece.
In addition to his
parents and wife, Doug is predeceased by his nephew, Christopher
Neilson.
Doug suffered from mental illness at
points throughout his life. He experienced this illness during a
period in our history in which such illnesses were misunderstood and
stigmatized. That prevented him from seeking and receiving the help
that could have made his life a more comfortable one. His life was
industrious and Doug helped a great many people, but he also lost
relationships and opportunities because of his illness. His family
hopes that anyone reading this obituary will be kind to someone who is
suffering.
Visitation will be held on Friday,
November 3, 2017 from 6 – 8 pm at Oromocto Funeral Home. A
Memorial Mass will take place at St. Vincent de Paul on Saturday,
November 4, 2017 at 11 am. There will be a reception following the
service at the Church Hall. Memorial donation may be made to
the Oromocto Rotary Club, the Oromocto SPCA or the charity of the
donor’s choice.
