W. Douglas Long
1919-2017
W. Douglas Long (Gramp) passed away
peacefully Friday, April 14, 2017 at the Veteran’s Health
Center in Moncton at the age of 98. Born January 21, 1919 in
Richibucto, NB, he was the son of the late James and Emma (White)
Long. He was the last surviving member of his
family.
Doug was a veteran of the Second World War.
After completing his training at the Royal Military College, he was
posted in England with the 406 Lynx Squadron. While overseas he served
as an Airborne Intercept Radar Technician. Upon his return from
Europe, he was employed by the federal government to construct homes
for members of the Elsipogtog First Nation. He then worked as a
carpenter for the Department of National Defense (#5 Supply Depot)
until he retired in 1980 with 20 years’
service.
He was a devoted father and his greatest
love was his family. He was a gentle soul who will be remembered by
many for his kindness. He was affectionately known as
« Gramp » not only by his grandchildren but all those who knew
him which attests to his loving, caring, nurturing nature. His door
was always open and all were welcome. He was passionate
about sports and a loyal fan of the Leafs and the Blue Jays, never
missing a
game.
Doug will be sadly missed by his loving
daughters, Faye Brown (Rob) of Moncton, Joyce Long of Moncton, Debbie
Nichols of Vancouver, BC and Muriel Ferguson (John) of Oakville, ON,
grandchildren Zachary and Hilary Brown, Mandy, Joshua and Joel
Babineau, Dennis and Jean Nichols, Jedediah and Kaleb Ferguson and his
cherished great grandchildren. He will also be missed by Randy Brown
who was like a son to him. He was predeceased by his son Douglas,
daughter Vickie, and beloved grandson Russell who held a special place
in his heart.
A heartfelt thank you to the staff of the
Veteran’s Health Center for the care, respect, compassion
and love extended to Doug and his family during his residency. Your
kindness will not be
forgotten.
Visitation will be held at Fergusons Funeral
Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) on Tuesday from 6:00 to
