Vivian Clarence « Vic » Manning
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Vic Manning, of Grand Desert, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather at the age of 84. He died peacefully on December 9, 2017, with his loving family by his side. Vic was born June 9, 1933 in Devonport North, England. During WW2, when he was 7 years old his father died at sea on Easter Sunday 1941 while serving in Her Majesty’s British Navy on board the HMS Rajputana, an armed merchant cruiser. One year later on Easter Saturday 1942 he lost his mother during a bombing in Gloucester where she worked in an airplane factory. After a period of time living with his grandparents he was placed in an orphanage. When he was 16 years old his aunt Mary “Grannie” Smith who lived Ontario, arranged for him to come to Canada. Vic arrived at Pier 21 on his own with no idea of what the future would hold. At 17 years old he joined Her Majesty’s Royal Canadian Navy in British Columbia and volunteered to serve in the Korean War. After returning to Canada Vic was posted to Halifax where he served as a radar plotter initially as an Ordinary Seaman, and rose to the rank of Petty Officer First. Class. He served on a number of ships including HMCS Ontario, Athabaskan/Huron, Buckingham, Annapolis/Qu’Appelle, Magnificent, Bonaventure, and Skeena. In the winter of 1955 he met the love of his life, Veronica Julien, at a dance hall in Halifax. They were were married just a few months later at St. Anselm’s Church by Father Austin Burke (later Archbishop Burke) on July 16, 1955. He was welcomed into the Julian family and her brothers nicknamed him “Vic”. Two years later they moved into her parents family home in Grand Desert. Their love story lasted for more than 62 years. From the day he met Veronica, her happiness always came first. Early in his naval career at her insistence he went AWOL the day his ship was set to sale which landed him in jail. He smoothed things over with his superiors and continued a long naval career. While he hated to be away from Veronica and his children, he loved his naval career and was very proud to serve his country. When he was home Vic was very involved in his parish church as a Eucharistic Minster, reader, and serving on parish council. He was also a very dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus for many years. Vic eventually retired from the Navy in 1976 and went on to work for Canada Post until 1991. He was very proud of his four children and instilled in them the importance of family. He would do anything for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Family and their happiness always came first. Vic is predeceased by his parents, Edwin Arthur (“Alf”) Manning and Winnifred Elsie Kathleen (Virgo); brother in infancy, Edward; and sisters, Barbara Bradbury, Mavis Johnson, Dorothy Blaney and Margaret Whittaker. He is survived by his loving wife Veronica (Julian); four children, Craig (Stacie Frowley), Scott (Wendy Miller), Blair (Susan Saunders) and Loretta (Wayne Matheson), grandchildren Olivia, Carli, Gillian, Isabella, Nicole, Mitchell, Tyler and Lindsay, and great grandchildren, Lily and Amelia. Thank you to Dr. Laukkanen and nurses, QEII HI site Department of Radiation Oncology and to Dr. Smith, and the nurses and staff at Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Hospital. In particular, we would like to thank charge nurse Shannon, palliative care nurse Melanie and dining room staff Shelly for their compassion and kindness throughout Vic’s admission and in particular during his last few days. Memorial mass will be held in St. Anslem’s Parish on Saturday, December 16, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., 207 Highway, West Chezzetcook. Reception to follow at St. Anselm’s church hall. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
