Victorine was born in Cardinal, Manitoba on June 7, 1918. She attended school in Cardinal, then high school in St. Adolphe and Joseph’s Academy, St Boniface from where she graduated before attending Normal School. She began her teaching career at Ecole Jeanne d’Arc. Victorine and Leon Cousin were married on September 30, 1939. They rented a small farm in Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes and Victorine continued teaching at École Lee till they bought the farm in Swan Lake. Victorine taught at Oak Hill School, then Somerset, St. Alphonse and Mariapolis until her retirement in 1983.
Victorine loved to teach. Her children have memories of her seated at the kitchen table, preparing lessons while supervising their homework. She also made time to read and to write.
Victorine’s life can be characterized by hard work and determination. Her main focus was her children: their education, home baked bread and buns, a large garden, lots of canning, sewing, teaching… and more.
In retirement, Victorine was active in Les Dames d’Isabelle in Somerset; then with the choir Partage de Bonheur in St. Boniface and playing cards at Paroisse St. Eugène. She also loved to travel.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Action Marguerite (formerly Foyer Valade) for their care and kindness during Victorine’s residence there.
