Very Reverend Daniel Nenson

Very Reverend Daniel Nenson May 14, 1933 – February 23, 2016

Daniel Nenson was born May 14, 1933, and passed away on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Alice; two sisters Virginia Murray (Bill) and Helen; his brother Alex and sister-in-law Lynn; his children; and several nieces and nephews. Daniel was born in Wheatstone, SK to parents Bucur and Maria. Daniel spent a few years on the farm prior to the family moving to Timmons, ON during the depression years. The family then moved back to settle just outside of Regina. Daniel grew up with 11 siblings, and with his four older brothers drafted in 1939, Daniel worked extremely hard on the acreage. He was up at 5 am to feed and water the animals and do chores, went to school, and also took a part-time job herding cattle for three hours every evening, earning .75 cents and a ½ gallon of milk daily. He graduated from Balfour Technical Collegiate and went on to build a career in the financial services area, first with Pemberton Securities in Penticton, BC, and ending as a senior manager with Laurentian Financial Services in Regina, after spending 40+ years in the industry. Daniel was brought up in the Romanian Orthodox Christian faith and attended St. Nicholas Church. It was there where he met Alice Lipan. They married on July 30, 1960 and had six children: Timothy Daniel, Douglas Michael, Garrett Christopher (Susan), Lisa Marie (Greg), Brian Matthew and Patricia Vera-Anne (Paul). They also have nine grandchildren: Stephen, Gabrielle (Matthew), Erin, Adam, Zachary, Jessica, Jacob, Lena and Mackenzie. Prior to leaving for Penticton, Daniel was the founding president of the Regina Romanian Orthodox Youth organization (REROY), which under his leadership grew to over 30 members and raised numerous dollars for church projects. After spending seven years in Penticton, Daniel was contacted by Archimandrite Martinian Ivanovici, informing him that more bilingual priests were needed, and asking that Daniel come study under him. He was the first Canadian-born, Romanian speaking priest in Canada. Daniel was ordained in September of 1970. He ministered at parishes in Assiniboia, Calgary, and Dysart, all the while continuing in a full-time capacity in the financial services industry. He was bestowed the honour of being appointed Dean of Canada of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate in 2000 and continued in that capacity until 2007. In addition to a strenuous working career and raising children, Daniel also found time to become involved in the community. He and Alice were the founding members of the Kidney Foundation Chapter in Regina. He also volunteered with the Canadian Diabetes Association, CNIB, the Romanian Pavilion at Mosaic and the Romanian food booth at the Exhibition. He was heavily involved in church activities, most notably the Deanery Centre at Fort Qu’Appelle, SK, where he and parishioners relocated and continued to restore a church, and also renovated the site so children to this day can enjoy summer camps. Daniel always made time for his children and grandchildren. You could often times find him at the arena, the ball field, at the pitch watching and cheering, or at the dance hall. And of course, like most dads, he was always the one you tapped when finances were needed. Probably the best indication of his personal impact are the posts which have begun to appear on social media: • How lucky I am to have someone that makes saying goodbye to so hard • There is great comfort in knowing he will always be with us in spirit • The warm sunshine today is your smile from Heaven • You have left a legacy of love, and were the most amazing father • You were the most amazing and influential father figure • ‘The thing is, he was also known for his great smile and little chuckle, laughing at his own jokes, and stories that went on forever! Daniel will be welcome in Heaven in the arms of God. PRAYERS will be held at St. George’s Romanian Orthodox Cathedral, 2005 Edgar Street, Regina, SK on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. A FUNERAL RITE will be held at St. George’s Romanian Orthodox Cathedral on Monday, February 29, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. with lunch to follow at the Regina Senior Citizen’s Centre of Regina, 2134 Winnipeg Street, Regina, SK. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. George Orthodox Cathedral, 2005 Edgar Street, Regina, SK. S4N 3K5 or the Regina Qu’Appelle Palliative Care Unit at the Pasqua Hospital, 1802 McAra Street, Regina, SK S4T 1A5. Arrangements entrusted to Regina Funeral Home (306) 789-8850.
