Obituary for Thomas William Edgerton
Thomas William Edgerton, CPA-CMA
May 21, 1925 – October 28, 2017
In his 93rd year, Tom passed away peacefully on Saturday morning at Markham Stouffville Hospital surrounded by the love and support of his family and friends.
His is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Kathleen, children Trevor(Sha), Peter(Judy) and Susan(Mark).
He was predeceased by the mother of his children Audrey(nee Knowles) and sons Bryan(Barb) and Stephen.
He was a devoted grandfather to Kim(Mark), Tammy(George), Michael(Pamela), Kirsten, Lindsay(Marcus), Cassie(Jay), Victoria(Bradley), Caroline(Matt) and Steven(Rachel). He is also survived by 8, but soon to be 9, great grandchildren.
Tom was born into a military family in Aldershot England, and at the age of 14 enlisted in The Royal Army Signal Corp, becoming a fully qualified Signal Operator, working in the War Office during the latter part of WW2.
In 1944 he transferred to the Army Air Corp, qualifying as a Glider pilot serving from 1944-1950, including 2 years in Palestine. He left the army in 1950.
In 1953 Tom immigrated to Canada with his young family, seeking new challenges and opportunities. Tom was not afraid of hard work and worked multiple jobs to support his young growing family. It was while working at Canada Wire and Cable that he pursued
his interest in Accounting and subsequently the use of emerging computer technology. He carried these interests through the remainder of his working life.
At the age of 50, when others may have thought of slowing down, Tom took to Squash and jogging, doing many10K runs, including the first Terry Fox Run.
In retirement he pursued his interest in wood working, making many patio chairs and tables, which are still standing the test of time. But his greatest joy was making things for the growing number of grandchildren at the time. Anything from toy boxes to toy cradles to book shelves. It is a joy knowing that some of these things are now being used by his great grandchildren.
The daily newspaper, cryptic crossword puzzles and a good book were his constant companion in later years and until recently, when health issues meant these beloved past times were not so easy to do.
He loved life, his family and friends and took pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He loved a party and we hope he enjoyed the one we had by his bedside in his final hours. The remembrances and funny anecdotes were heartwarming.
Special thanks go to Doctor Bansal and the caring nursing staff of the Critical Care Unit at Markham Stouffville Hospital. Their empathy and support made a difficult time bearable for all his family and friends.
We will celebrate and reflect on Tom’s life at the Chapel Ridge Funeral Home, 8911 Woodbine Avenue, Markham. Visitation on Thursday November 2 from 7-9pm. Visitation Friday 11am-noon, followed by a service at noon.
