Thelma B. Mitton
Thelma B. Mitton, nee Steeves, passed away peacefully on
September 5th, 2016 at the K.E. Spencer Memorial Home, Moncton, NB at
the age of 103.
She was born in Meadow, Albert Co., NB, on January 3, 1913,
the daughter of the late Ainsley and Adelaide Steeves.
A woman of great faith, she was a charter member of Uplands
Baptist Church, a Dominion Life member of the Atlantic Baptist Women,
Sunday School and Mission Band leader and an ardent scripture
memorization student. For years Thelma had Bible Studies in her home.
Her warmth, sense of humor, love of life and family, hospitality and
interest in Missions will long be remembered by those who knew
her.
Teaching was her passion and after graduating from Normal
School in Fredericton, she taught grades 1 to 9 in a one room school
in Meadow. She later taught in Hillside, New Horton, Parkton and
Uplands. She loved teaching grade one and even recently former
students would approach her, give her a hug and thank her for giving
them such a good start in school.
Thelma was predeceased by her husband, Reid; son, Wayne;
brothers, Herman, Tom, Ainsley; sisters Gladys, Annie, Christy,
Beatrice and niece, Eleanor, who grew up as a sister. Thelma was the
last living member of her family. Surviving her are her daughter Janet
(Jim) Hirtle of Vancouver, BC; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and
many nephews and nieces.
A celebration of Thelma’s life and faith will be held at
Uplands Baptist Church, 398 Salisbury Road, on Saturday, September 10,
2016 at 2:00 pm, with Rev. Gordon James officiating. Reception and
visitation will be held following the service. Donations may be made
to Uplands Baptist Church or a charity of your choice at that
time.
