March 21, 1922 – March 31, 2011 Shirley Ekelund of Pincher Creek, AB passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the age of 89 years, beloved wife of the late Elmer Ekelund. Shirley is survived by her daughter Nona (Al); sons Douglas (Nancy), Bill (Myrna), Andy (Judy); daughter-in-law Evelyn; 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Shirley was also predeceased by her youngest daughter Darlene and eldest son Rick. Shirley was born to Robert and Jessie Stoughton and was raised in North Cobalt, ON until she was eleven years old, where she then moved with her family to Duparquet, Que., where she met and married Elmer in 1942, living in Arvida and Montreal during the war years. Following the war, Elmer and Shirley moved west to Calgary in 1947, where they raised their six children. In 1974 they moved to the family homestead in the Twin Butte area. They owned and operated the Waterton Homestead Campground, until their retirement in 1981 where they still remained on the homestead until 2005. They then moved to the Crestview Lodge in Pincher Creek where Shirley spent her last years travelling, enjoying the sociability of the other residents, her family and friends. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 P.M., on Wednesday, April 6, 2011at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints – Pincher Creek, 1240 Wentworth Ave. Pincher Creek, AB, Friends may meet the family from 12:15 P.M. to 12:45 P.M., Bishop Wayne Oliver, Presiding. Interment to follow in Fairview Cemetery. Memorial Donations may be made in Shirley’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, 317-10th St. S., Lethbridge, AB, T1J 2M7.
