Sheila Doone MacDuff (née Hanson). March 19, 1923 – December 7, 2015 Peacefully, in her sleep. Her first love was her Daddy, and then her Granddaddy. Her sisters three (Elizabeth, Gerry and Nora) were her world, and her lush family tree of cousins were her universe. She married Robert for true love through letters to the trenches in Holland. He brought her a wedding bouquet from his mother’s garden, a diamond ring from London, and a puppy named Kim. They built a dream house and made three beautiful lives (Doone, Robyn and Dugal). He died too soon. Her next love was grandchildren (Posie, Colin, Margot, Jennie and Hannah), who couldn’t imagine life without her (and still can’t). Five great-grandchildren too (MacDuff, Henry, Rhiannon, Brigid and Griffin): how lucky they were to know her. She was a canvasser and a librarian. She helped people, and always tried to understand. She knew space and colour. She ran a flower business (Flowers & Things). She painted. She wrote wicked verses. She sewed and knitted – perfectly. She had 12 westies, and she loved them all like people. She always knew what to say: she always knew what to do…and if you were lucky, she’d tell you what to do as well. She got old, painfully old, and drank gin, ate cheetos, and watched Laurence Welk. She had a namesake. She loved butter. She brought England home. She never finished her 4 o’clock tea. She got over a lot and never forgot a single soul who made a mark on her life. And we’ll never, ever, forget her. « How lucky we are to have known somebody to whom saying goodbye is so damned awful. » A Memorial Service will be held at St. George’s Cathedral (corner of King St and Johnson St), Kingston on Friday December 11, 2015 at 2pm. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to the Kingston Humane Society or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to Robert J. Reid & Sons, “The Chapel on the Corner”.
